Williamsport pitchers gave up two five-run innings as it suffered its worst loss of the season, 12-2, to the Wild Card-leading Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

The loss overshadowed the sixth home run of the season hit by Williamsport right fielder Jhailyn Ortiz. The solo home run in the top of the eighth inning by the 18-year-old Ortiz tied him with three other players, including Cutters teammate Cole Stobbe, for the New York-Penn League home run lead.

Cutters starting pitcher Spencer Howard lasted just two innings, throwing 39 of his 62 pitches for strikes. The second-round pick out of Cal-Poly surrendered four hits and four earned runs. He struck out four and walked two.

Reliever Jhon Nunez followed, allowing three runs in one inning. After two shutout innings from Connor Seabold, Orestes Melendez gave up five runs and four hits in 1 1/3 innings for Williamsport.

Mahoning Valley scored a season-high 12 runs with only two extra-base hits. Leadoff hitter Samad Taylor was 4 for 4 for the Scrappers with five runs batted in.

Ortiz was the only Crosscutter to record multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with his home run.
