Local roundup: Keystone, Newberry 9-11 baseball win

Both Keystone and Newberry’s 9-11 baseball teams posted wins in the District 12 tournament quarterfinals.

Keystone defeated Williamsport-Red, 15-5, and Newberry defeated Loyalsock, 4-1. With the wins, both Keystone and Newberry advance to the semifinals and will play each other at Newberry on Friday at 6 p.m.

Williamsport-Red falls into the losers’ bracket and plays South Williamsport in an elimination game at East Lycoming on Wednesday at 6 pm.

Loyalsock awaits the winner of that game at Old Lycoming on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the losers’ bracket.

• At the Summer Invitational in Palmyra, the Babe Ruth West End 13-year-old team won the 18-team tournament with a 12-11 win over All-Star Baseball Academy Downington on Sunday.

West End won on Friday, 22-2, and then blanked an opponent, 16-0, Saturday to earn the No. 3 seed in the tournament.

The team then played four games on Sunday, winning 13-1 with Xavier Taylor and Owen Berry pitching. West End won the second game, 8-0, with Josh Rankey and Cooper Larson pitching and in the third game, Michael Collyer and Owen Barry pitched West End to a 10-2 win.

In the championship, Josh Heath and Xavier Taylor pitched the first three innings before Maddix Dalena came in and pitched the final four innings to earn the win. In the back and forth game that saw West End come-from-behind four times, Nolan Kutney hit a late two-run home run before Dalena drove in the winning run.

“Josh Rankey played a reliever-starter role and he was incredible as far as long pitching assignments and as far as innings pitched,” West End coach George Lepley said. “The team defense was just phenomenal as well.”

“Most of these guys were from a number of different teams and they really came together,” Lepley added. “By the end of the day they were clicking and cheering for each other.”

The roster included 14 players: Nolan Kutney, Landon Lorson, Cayden Hess, Cam Sims, Chase Hoffman, Atreyu Murray, Nick Barone, Xavier Taylor, Carter Sagan, Josh Rankey, Cooper Larson, Owen Barry, Michael Collyer and Maddix Dalena.

The coaches were George Lepley, Jimmy Bennett and Drae Lewis.

West End next plays in the state tournament in Altoona beginning July 14.
