NTL girls soccer: NP-Mansfield looking to improve after difficult 2016

Offensive success was not something North Penn-Mansfield experienced much of last year. In fact, the team last year scored five goals while going 0-18 and finishing last in the Northern Tier League.

It was a difficult season for Mansfield trying to stay in games. But Mansfield looks to be more competitive this year, and coach Maryann Wilcox thinks the team has the ability.

“This year looks more promising with the combination of experience of our returning players and our gain of some new talented freshmen,” Wilcox said. “We only scored five goals last season. This team is eager to shoot the ball.

“I believe this season will still be tough for us, but we are hoping to prove to be a more competitive team this year.”

The NTL had four teams last year make the postseason in league champion Athens, Troy, Sayre and Northeast Bradford. And those teams, in addition to Wellsboro, should provide tough games for Mansfield.

Athens is the favorite to win the league again. Sayre lost talented Chloe Tracy to graduation, the only player in District 4 history to score 100 goals and dish out 100 assists in a career, boys or girls.

Troy lost 100-goal scorer and all-state selection Brooke Ward, of Canton High School, and Becca Cass, both of whom were NTL all-star selections.

In addition to all-state selection Tracy, Sayre lost NTL all-star Kaitlynn McCarter, but does return second-team NTL defender Stephanie Klovekorn.

Mansfield returns 16 players from last year’s team, in addition to adding 15 players to the roster. The team did lose Megan Tice, Sarah Hohman, Brie Edler, Kyle Fenstermacher and Madysson Stocum.

Two key players back for Mansfield include both junior Alexis Pratt and senior Alyssa Remley, both of which are captains.

“Her passion for the sport comes through and is contagious and she urges her teammates to stay focused and on task with leading by example,” Wilcox said of Pratt. “(Remley’s) a great role model for the younger players of how to have fun and work hard at the same time. She exhibits a great maturity level for her peers to follow.”

In goal, Mansfield has back Alaina McKee, who had an area-high 320 saves last year – nearly 60 more than the next goalie – and was tested constantly in just about every game she played.

“She is as dedicated as ever and ready to protect her house,” Wilcox said.

McKee was a first-team NTL all-star goalie co-selection last year, sharing the honor with Troy’s Brianna Rathbun.

Wellsboro last year finished 6-11-1 and missed making the playoffs one year after the team won its first playoff game in program history.

The Green Hornets only lose three seniors from last year’s team in NTL second-team all-star defender Makanna Johnson and captains Janessa Davis and Kelsey Logan, meaning the team has plenty returning to build off last season.

One player back is NTL second-team all-star goalie Kailee Clymer, who had 190 saves last season and posted two shutouts in goal.

Offensively, Wellsboro returns Emma Poirier, a junior who led the team both in goals (eight) and assists (six) last season. Also back are juniors Julia Smith (four goals, three assists) and Dahlia Hosey (three goals).

Wellsboro first-year coach Scott Burrous did not return email for comment in time for this story.

Williamson will look to improve off its five-win season last year.

“(We’re) smaller in numbers, but confident that we can improve on last year’s five wins. Returners worked hard this offseason and we have some athletic newcomers that should make a difference,” Williamson coach Jordan Collum said. “We have also greatly improved at the keeper position.”
