Local roundup: Loyalsock tennis tops Hughesville

A showdown between undefeated tennis teams more than lived up to the hype Saturday afternoon as Loyalsock won a back and forth, 3-2 thriller at Hughesville. Madison Savidge clinched the win for Loyalsock at No. 2 singles, downing Jade Cordrey in an entertaining and hard-fought 3-2 match.

Rachel Thomas and Kendra Smith won the other singles matches for Hughesville (6-1). The doubles teams of Abigail Patel and Sienna Tolomay and Melina Vuocolo and Morgan O’Connor won their matches as Loyalsock improved to 7-0.

Sierra Burris and Autumn Brelo were double winners in singles and doubles for Galeton as it dropped a 4-3 decision to Towanda. Burris and Brelo both won singles matches in straight sets and took their doubles match in three sets, winning the last set, 10-6.

Wellsboro swept the singles competition en route to a 5-2 win over St. John Neumann. Olivia Ryan won for the Green Hornets at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Maylyn Ettinger.

Neumann’s Ettinger and Megan Helminiak won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.

Cowanesque Valley defeated North Penn-Liberty, 7-0. Brynn Williams won for CV at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

• Rhiallie Jessell scored in the 44th minute to put Loyalsock ahead of Warrior Run in a 1-0 win in girls soccer.

The Lancers improved to 3-0 with the win. Grace Schreckengast had four saves for the Lancers and Megan Zimmerman had five for Warrior Run.

Jessica Umpstead scored twice as Montgomery and Millville battled to a 2-2 tie. Abby Duck had eight saves for Montgomery.

Lela Warner scored a pair of goals and added a pair of assists as South Williamsport picked up a 6-3 win over Mount Carmel.

Amilee Miller and Lexi Yerger also each scored two goals for the Mounties who scored on half of their 12 shots.

Lydia Kirkendall scored an opening goal for Jersey Shore, but Selinsgrove scored two unanswered en route to a 2-1 win. Hannah Kauffman had 13 saves for the Bulldogs.

Benton scored four second-half goals to defeat Muncy, 7-0. Makenna Snyder recorded 16 saves for Muncy.

Sloane Tressler scored twice on penalty kicks and Sadie McCaleb added a goal, but Central Mountain lost to Shamokin, 4-3. Avey Baker had an assist for the Wildcats.

Paige Temple scored the only goal of the game as Bloomsburg defeated Hughesville, 1-0.

• Curtis Sauers scored three goals and had two assists and Caleb Snyder had two goals as South Williamsport defeated Mount Carmel in a rout, 8-0, for the Mounties first win of the year.

South scored four goals in each half, and limited the Red Tornadoes to just two shots.

Selinsgrove scored a goal with 71 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Seals a 3-2 win over Warrior Run.

Jordan Morrison scored both of the Defenders’ goals.

Lucas Shultz had a hat trick as Sullivan County defeated Hughesville, 4-3. Austin Lewis scored twice for Hughesville and Justus Leighow had a goal and assist.

• Second half goals by Larissa Motts and Meghan Griffin sealed the deal for Mansfield in a 3-1 win over Bellarmine (Ky.) in the Mountaineers’ field hockey home opener .

Motts put Mansfield on the board in just the third minute. Mansfield outshot the Knights, 25-4, putting 12 shots on frame.

• Lycoming senior Jordan Lazarich became the first player in school history to post 50 career goals, but the Lycoming College women’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Ramapo in the opening round of the Drew Fall Festival.

Lazarich scored the Warriors lone goal on a nice cross from freshman Elle Sarracco that Lazarich volleyed into the net to cut the Ramapo lead in half in the 59th minute.

Warrior Run grad Madi Welliver got time in goal for the Warriors.

Mansfield’s trailed by only one goal at halftime, but dropped their home opener to Slippery Rock, 7-0.

The Mountaineers played strong in the first half, allowing only one goal from Slippery Rock’s Brooke Testa off a pass from Maddy Tletski.

Jordan Shoff led Lock Haven over Edinboro 1-0 in overtime. Shoff’s goal came one minute into the overtime period. Central Mountain grad Bree Hilty had six saves in goal for Lock Haven.

• Le Moyne scored two first-half goals and kept Lock Haven scoreless en route to a 3-0 win in men’s soccer. LHU was outshot, 17-9.

Lycoming sophomore Tanner Fonjweng and freshman Alex Henry scored first-half goals within a 90-second span as the Warriors opened the Red Devil Classic with a 3-0 win over host Dickinson College.

• Penn College had the top finisher in the women’s cross country race at the Mustang Invitational as Jersey Shore grad Sidney Trunzo won in 24:45, 33 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Mansfield’s Kenzie Jones took a first-place finish at the Flatlander Invitational at Lamb’s Creek in a time of 10:56 as teammate Kirsten Anderson finished a minute later.

• In men’s cross country, Penn College’s Josh Veloz won the 8K course at the Mustang Invitational in 28:08, edging out SUNY-ESF’s Mark McClenahan by just two seconds.

At the Flatlander Invitational at Lamb’s Creek, Mansfield junior Ryan Clifford took first overall with a time of 16:12.

• Penn College dropped a 3-0 NEAC match to Morrisville before being edged, 3-1, in a non-conference game against Misericordia in a tri-match.

• Lycoming fell to Juniata College in the season opener, 9-0. Rob Smith lost in No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-3.

• Lycoming Women’s tennis lost 9-1 to Juniata in their forst match of the season. Julia Nagel and Hannah Summerson won No. 2 doubles 8-5.

Kaitlin Hallabuk fell in three sets to Amali Mishy 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
