Local roundup: Williamsport boys top Loyalsock in opener

The Williamsport boys scored four goals in the first half en route to a win over Loyalsock, 7-2. Tiarnan Ferry scored two goals and Tom Pombor and Zach Sawyer added one each in the first half.

Loyalsock’s Alek Hamilton and Matt Barone got the Lancers on the board in the second half.

Hughesville defeated Shamokin in a rout, 9-0, thanks to a four-goal performance from Austin Lewis.

Lewis scored four goals and added two assists while Ryan Strimple and Justus Leighow both scored two goals each. Isaiah Savage had a team-high four assists for Hughesville.

Muncy defeated Mount Carmel, 3-0, before falling to Shikellamy, 3-1. In the first game, Nathan Paisley, Bryce Phillips and Tyler Girven all found the back of the net.

Phillips scored the game-tying goal against Shikellamy to make it 1-1 before the Braves scored two unanswered.

Montoursville played Danville in the championship game of the Burke Tournament at Montoursville High School on Saturday. Montoursville beat Milton in the first game of the tournament while Danville advanced with a win over Columbia County Christian. Scores from those games were not available.

• Gabby Lisi scored twice and Shayna McNamee added a goal as St. John Neumann opened the season with a 3-2 win over Millville in girls soccer.

Hughesville’s Morgan Hopkins, Jayden Leighow and Sarah Pysher all scored goals, but the Spartans fell to Southern Columbia, 6-3, to start the season. Hopkins added an assist.

Loyalsock had five girls score in a 5-0 shutout of Mount Carmel. Sam Stopper, Jenna Gardner, Charlotte Neylon, Eve Heilenman and Ariel Hornberger all scored goals. For Heilenman, it was her first varsity goal.

Williamsport blanked Central Mountain for its first win of the season, 3-0. Katie Penman started the Millionaires off with their first goal of the season in the 39th minute. Aaryka Goodwell and Haley Whitford both scored in the 55th and 60th minutes, respectively.

Montoursville opened the year with a win over Troy in the 2017 Burke Tournament at Montoursville High School and beat Holy Redeemer in the championship game in a shootout after double overtime tied 1-1, winning the shootout, 7-6.

Annie Schult, Caroline King, Kenna Mensinger, Kaylie Schans and Bella Masias all scored in the penalty kick shootout. Maddie McDonald scored the game-tying goal in the 77th minute off an assist from Kyleigh Balint.

• At the Big Valley Invitation in Reedsville, Lewisburg won the Class AA title with a 64-point finish in boys cross country. Shikellamy finished second and Jersey Shore took third.

Jersey Shore’s Isaac Davis though won the race in 15:54, besting the second-place runner by 25 seconds.

Lewisburg’s Jason Stanko was ninth and Calvin Bailey, also of Lewisburg, finished 10th.

• In girls cross country at the Big Valley Invitational in Reedsville, Lewisburg made it a 1-2 finish to help the Green Dragons win in Class AA with 34 points.

Delaney Humphrey won in 20:08 and teammate Lauren Michaels finished second in 20:21 for the Green Dragons.

Jersey Shore’s Abby Gerst took a sixth-place finish in a time of 20:58.

• Bucknell lost 5-0 to No. 5 Syracuse in non-conference field hockey action at Coyne Stadium.

Bucknell dropped to 1-2 with both losses coming to teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

• Penn College opened the season going 1-1 in a pair of non-conference women’s volleyball matches at the Lycoming College Classic. It’s the first win for any Penn College team since the college became full members of NCAA Division III.

Penn College lost to Lycoming, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-15) and defeated Clarks Summit, 3-1 (29-27, 19-25, 25-23, 25-14).

Lycoming’s Catherine Burger posted 14 assists in a 3-0 win over Clarks Summitt (25-14, 25-15, 25-10).

Bucknell volleyball opened play at the Hatter Classic with a pair of matches, dropping its opener, 3-1, to Providence before falling 3-0 to ECU. Bucknell dropped to 3-2.

• Lock Haven scored the game-tying goal in the 77th minute, but CLarion scored the game winner with 1.2 seconds to play to win, 2-1, in women’s soccer against the Bald Eagles.

Jordan Shoff tied it up before Meliah Roman got the game-winner. LHU outshot Claron, 11-8.

Kersten O’Brien scored her first goal of the season but neither team could find the back of the net in double overtime as Pitt-Johnstown and Mansfield tied, 1-1.

O’Brien scored in the ninth minute on a goal off a pass from Eleni Gebbia.

• Katie Jamison and Abbie Predmore each notched goals to lead Mansfield past Southern Connecticut State, 2-0, in the Ship Field Hockey Classic.

Jamison put the Mounties on the board with a goal off a rebounded shot in the 26th minute.

• In men’s soccer, Grove City defeated Penn College, 3-1. The two sides played to a 1-1 tie in the first half. The Wildcats’ lone goal came from Loyalsock goal Matthew Hibbs.

• In her first collegiate tennis match, sophomore Devinity Apollon proved to be the difference as she picked up a crucial win at No. 2 singles as Lycoming women’s tennis team picked up a 5-4 opening-season win over Mt. Aloysius. Fellow sophomore Hannah Summerson, a South Williamsport grad, also picked up a big win, earning the 6-2, 6-1 win over Emily Goldyn at No. 1 singles.
