WILDCAT WEEKLY: 2 Penn College teams hit win column

Pennsylvania College of Technology tasted victory last week in women’s soccer and men’s tennis action.

Women’s soccer

Hosting crosstown rival Lycoming College on Wednesday in the eighth annual Battle for the Lumber trophy, the Wildcats scored a 3-0 win as freshman Dominique Brown, of Benton, tallied all three goals. Penn College led in shots, 20-13 (10-8 on goal), and in corner kicks, 10-9. Lycoming leads the series 5-2-1 as the Wildcats snapped a three-year loss streak against the Warriors.

At Wilkes University on Saturday, Penn College lost, 3-0, to drop to 1-2-1 overall. Unbeaten Wilkes (4-0-1) dominated in shots, 23-1 (14-0 on goal), and in corner kicks, 5-0.

Men’s soccer

On Monday at Pitt-Greensburg, Penn College lost, 1-0. The home team led in shots on goal, 6-4, while Penn College led in corner kicks, 10-4, as the Wildcats dropped to 1-4.

Men’s tennis

For the first time since April 3, 2015, Penn College blanked an opponent 9-0 when it beat Misericordia University on Monday. Winning both their singles and doubles matches for Penn College were Blake Whitmire, of Shickshinny; Nicholas Pascual, of Doylestown; Garrett Benner, of Selinsgrove; Joe Morrin, of Morrisville; Ethan Rosler, of Bloomsburg; and Andrew Francisco, of Bronx, New York.

On Saturday at Arcadia University, Penn College lost, 8-1, to fall to 1-2 overall. Will DeMarco, of Glen Mills, picked up the lone Penn College win at No. 6 singles.

Women’s tennis

In their season opener at Misericordia University on Monday, the Wildcats lost, 9-0. Hosting Susquehanna University on Thursday, Penn College again lost, 9-0. On Saturday at Arcadia University, Penn College lost, 9-0, to drop to 0-3.

Golf

Penn College opened its season finishing third (328) on Wednesday at the Keuka College Invitational. SUNY Delhi topped the 11-team field with a 315. Individually for the Wildcats, freshman Eli Dyer, of Wallingford, Connecticut, placed fourth with a 79 while Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, and Mike Lautensack, of Berwyn, each carded 82 to tie for seventh. Also for Penn College, Dan Pivirotto, of State College, shot an 85 and Ben Fails, of Hummelstown, a 94.

Men’s/Women’s cross country

In a first for Penn College since joining the North Eastern Athletic Conference in 2014, two Wildcats were honored as conference Runners of the Week after Josh Velez, of Lewistown, and Sidney Trunzo, of Williamsport, won their respective men’s and women’s races a week ago at the Morrisville State College Invitational.

Women’s volleyball

Hosting Penn State Abington on Wednesday in its only match of the week, Penn College lost, 1-3 (22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 14-25). Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, led the Wildcats with 28 digs and 18 assists.
