District 4 singles tourney begins Saturday

The draw for the District 4 singles girls tennis tournament was announced on Thursday afternoon. Hughesville’s Rachel Thomas was named the overall No. 1 seed and Loyalsock’s Katie Savidge was the overall No. 2 seed. Montoursville’s Maddy Reeves is seeded third. All three receive byes into the second round.

The first three rounds will be played on Saturday at Williamsport High School at 9 a.m. The semifinals and finals will be played Monday at the West Branch Tennis Club.

Some first round matchups include Loyalsock’s Jenna Beiter against Lewisburg’s Lauren Shearer, Montgomery’s Katie Forrestal against Milton’s Hanna Seebold, South’s Lauren Peck against Loyalsock’s Madison Savidge, Montoursville’s Olivia Evans against Wellsboro’s Morgan Guthrie and Milton’s Rachel Boop against Jersey Shore’s Sophie Hayes.

On the bottom side of the bracket, Jersey Shore’s Cassidy Rell plays Neumann’s Maylyn Ettinger, Muncy’s Isabella Rymsza is against Hughesville’s Kendra Smith, South’s Lily Summerson plays Libert’s ISabell Clark and Wellsboro’s Olivia Ryan plays Montgomery’s Abby Stryker.

Thomas will play the winner of Selinsgrove’s Daisy Ettinger and Towanda’s Kelsie Davidson in the second round. Savidge will play the winner of Ryan/Stryker and Reeves will receive the winner of Mifflinburg’s Allison Wagner and Central Columbia’s Tessa Gill.

South Williamsport’s Anya Plotnikova won the last two singles championships in 2016 and 2015 and Loyalsock’s Pam Niditch won from 2012-14. The last time a player from South Williamsport or Loyalsock did not win the singles tennis District 4 title was 2008 when Hughesville’s Megan Gardner won her repeat championship.
