Penn State at Illinois a Friday night game for 2018

Penn State’s football game next season at Illinois has been designated for Friday, Sept. 21, the conference announced Friday as one of five non-Saturday games next season for the Big Ten Network.

The game falls between two Saturday PSU home games, vs. Kent State on Sept. 15 and vs. Ohio State on Sept. 29.

Others are Northwestern at Purdue, Thursday, Aug. 30, Utah State at Michigan State and Western Kentucky at Wisconsin on Friday, Aug. 31, and Indiana at Minnesota on Friday, Oct. 26.

Penn State had said it would consider up to one road Friday night game per season, but no Friday night home games.

The last time Penn State had an early-season non-Saturday game scheduled was Thursday Sept. 13, 2001 at Virginia when Joe Paterno had a chance to tie Bear Bryant’s all-time Division I wins record. But that game was postponed to Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in response to 9/11.
