Local roundup: Hinton scores 34, but LHU men fall on road

Lock Haven fell to Virginia Union, 72-69, in the Bald Eagles’ men’s soccer season opener. Amir Hinton led the Bald Eagles with 34 points shooting 8 for 9 from the arc and eight rebounds.

• Bucknell opened the season with a 76-71 win over Rider in women’s basketball. Kaitlyn Slagus recorded her 14th career double-double with a 14 point, 11 rebound game.

Jordyn Kloster paced Lock Haven with 11 points in her debut, but it wasn’t enough as the Bald Eagles fell to host Fairmont State, 76-62.

• Lock Haven dropped a five-set match to Shippenburg in college volleyball. Shaye Whiteman broke the Bald Eagle single-season record with 27 digs on the night. Roni Morrison had 14 kills, and Kristen Nealon had 33 assists.

• In college wrestling, Tyler Smith improved to 3-0 by topping Luke Karam during Bucknell’s dual against No. 10 Lehigh on Friday night at Sojka Pavilion, as Lehigh won, 36-3.

In his first start of the 2017-18 campaign, Montoursville graduate Garrett Hoffman of Bucknell rallied from an early 6-0 deficit to drop a tight 9-5 decision to Jake Jakobsen.

• In college cross country, Bucknell’s Christine Bendzinski earned an automatic bid with a fourth-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Bendzinski’s fourth-place finish came in a field of 195 runners. She completed the 6k race in 20:14.

• After tying the program record with 18 wins and winning their third MAC Commonwealth Championship in five years, the seventh-ranked Lycoming College men’s soccer team will host the NCAA Division III first and second rounds at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. The Warriors host Lehman College at 11 a.m. today.
