Local roundup: Lyco men hold off late Alvernia rally

As Alvernia University looked to close a 17-point lead as the clock ticked under five minutes remaining, the 12th-ranked Lycoming College men’s basketball team made plays — as Alex Newbold drew a huge charge that negated a layup and Chris Wallace had six points in the closing drive to help Lycoming hold off the late rally from Alvernia, 73-62, in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday.

Wallace led Lycoming with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Newbold added 12 points and six rebounds.

• Lycoming senior Shelby Mueller became the 10th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and the highest-scoring team in the MAC Commonwealth overcame a slow start in the first half to score 42 in the second and cruise past Alvernia, 63-45, in MAC Commonwealth.

Mueller, who reached the mark with a jumper with 2:43 left in the second quarter, finished with game-highs of 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Warriors.

Lycoming started the second half on a 9-0 run, with senior Haley Sipple starting the run with a layup and finishing it with a 3-pointer, as Lycoming took a 30-19 lead.
