Local roundup: Lyco men win thriller at Hood

Lycoming senior Chris Wallace made a layup with 21 seconds remaining for the 13th and final lead change of the second half and Lycoming College hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final 11 seconds as the 11th-ranked Warriors defeated Hood College, 83-77, to escape with a MAC Commonwealth win on Saturday in men’s basketball.

The Warriors were led by T.J. Duckett’s 16 points while Alex Newbold scored 14, Ronald Jefferson scored 13 and Damani Myers added 10.

Loyalsock grad Ben Sosa led Penn College with a 13-point performance, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats fell to SUNY Cobleskill, 77-52, in an NEAC contest.

Ryan Lockman added 10 points for Penn College while Jesse White had a team-high nine rebounds.

Mansfield’s Cedrick Powell came up with a huge offensive rebound and converted an and-one in the final minute to lift Mansfield past visiting Edinboro, 69-64, in a wild finish at Decker Gymnasium in PSAC crossover play.

Malik Carter scored a team-high 14 points for Mansfield to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Worthem made it three straight games with a double-double recording 12 points and 11 rebounds.

• Lycoming avoided an 0-2 start in league play by coming up with a road win at Hood, 72-56.

Shelby Mueller had a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Kayla Kline and Lewisburg grad Akilah McFadden both had 10 points for the Warriors.

Penn College lost at home to SUNY Cobleskill, 49-34. Ericka Lepley and Tori Wolfe led Penn College with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Loyalsock grad Cassi Kuhns and Wolfe had a team-high nine rebounds each.

Mansfield’s Brielle Kelly scored a team-high 16 points and added 10 rebounds, but Mansfield could not recover after a slow first half in an 81-54 loss at home to Edinboro.

Kelly is three points away from passing Alicia Espigh for 16th on the all-time scoring list.

Alyssa Mullins scored 10 points and Melanie Taylor brought seven of her own from the bench. Mullins also added seven boards to Kelly’s 10.

• With wins over top-10 ranked wrestlers, Lycoming junior Trevor Corl and senior Brandon Conrad announced their presences on the national scene and won their weight classes at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational.

Corl, the No. 4 seed at 149 pounds, dominated on his way to the title, accounting for 23 of Lycoming’s 79 team points in the tournament, finishing with two tech falls and two pins in five bouts.

Conrad contributed 18 team points en route to the title at 174 pounds, where he beat Oswego’s sixth-ranked Troy Seymour, 6-3, in the championship match.

Penn College’s Dylan Otis finished fourth at Messiah’s Petrofes Invitational to highlight Penn College’s showing.

Otis fell to the eventual 285-pound champion Paul Triandafilou of Gettysburg, 5-2 and dropped his consolation final with a fall in 7:34 against Springfield’s Joe Fusco.

• The Lock Haven University women’s indoor track and field team capped off its start to the season at the Bucknell Bison Opener today as Lock Haven racked up numerous PSAC Championship qualifying marks. Rashana Tompkins led the way as she broke the LHU 60-meter hurdle record.

Tompkins broke the record in the prelims when she sped to a time of 9.09 to also qualify her for the finals where she took second.

• The Lock Haven University swimming team dropped a dual meet at Kutztown, 143-93, in PSAC action.

The Bald Eagles were led by strong outings from Kristin Allen and Raechel Rodriguez, as both were able to take first in two events apiece. Allen won the 100 and 200 back. Rodriguez won the 100 and 200 breast.

• In men’s soccer, South Williamsport grad Dakota Rosenberg started for Messiah and helped the Falcons win the Division 3 championship with a 2-1 win over North Park. Lewisburg grad Adam Cole came off the bench and played 35 minutes.
