Local roundup: Shore boys beat Midd-West; Hughesville girls top Benton

In boys basketball, Jer­sey Shore defeated Midd-West, 55-34, as Junior Armstrong nearly had a double-double with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. He also swiped three steals on Tuesday night.

Nate Ewing added 13 points for the Bulldogs and Tanner Lorson had six boards and two steals.

North Penn-Mansfield defeated Wyalusing, 55-50. Mansfield used a 28-point second quarter to help distance itself.

Dylan Meyer and Garrett David combined for 24 points for Mansfield.

Brandyn Choplosky scored 14 points, Noah Spencer added 11 but it wasn’t enough as North Penn-Liberty lost by just four points, 57-53.

Williamson was led by Simon Fish’s 15 points and Tanner Adriance’s 13.

Sullivan County moved to 3-0 with a 74-26 win over Benton. Alex Baumick totaled 18 points, John Saxe had 15.

Wellsboro downed, NE Bradford, 43-37. Brandyn Tuttle had a double-double 14 points, 13 rebounds and a steal, Tanner Button and Collin Pietropola each had 10 points.

Gavin Stein totaled 34 points as Athens defeated Canton 80-41. Aaron Lane had 3 treys and 16 points. Michael Smithers led Canton with 16 points.

CV fell to Troy 54-41. Daniel Freeman led the Indians with 16 points, Christian Kemp added 15.

Lewisburg fell to Selinsgrove 70-63. Nate Liscum totaled 29 points and 9-12 from the line, Nick Shedleski had 16 points.

• In girls basketball, Jada Whaley and Shelly Floyd scored double digits despite Williamsport loss to Hazleton, 67-43. Whaley led the Millionaires with 13 points, Floyd had 10.

Hughesville beat Benton, 37-29. Emily Akers scored 12 points, Jayedn Leighow had 8.

Wellsboro remained undefeated with a 62-54 win over Coudersport. Emma Poirier totaled 22 points, Cathryn Brought had 14 and Tory Self and Lizzie Poirier both had 12.

Emily Sholly and Lewisburg downed Lourdes, 44-31. Sholly led the Dragons with 17 points, Grace Kelleher had 12.

• In wrestling, Dylan Troncone picked up Williamson’s lone win with a forfeit victory at 220 pounds as Troy defeated Athens, 51-6, in a match which featured just four contested bouts.

Robert Brown won by fall at 285 pounds for Wellsboro in a 57-18 loss to Athens. Kyle Manogue and Trevor Weaver each picked up a forfeit for Wellsboro.

Warrior Run’s Austin Blair earned a win by pinfall at 160 pounds in just 48 seconds to help the Defenders easily top Hughesville, 66-9, in high school wrestling.

Warrior Run started the bout with consecutive pins at 126 and 132 by Jeremy Hanford and Dylan Ko­lenda in 2:13 and 2:37, respectively.

Loyalsock fielded five wrestlers in 60-9 loss to Mifflinburg. Jacob Waltz (160) and Brad Conroy (285) pick up wins for the Lancers.

Muncy defeated Blooms­burg in its season opener, 69-11. Mario Barberio, Bryce Vollman, Joe Klock, Noah Gush and Michael Kustanbauter all secured pinnes for the Indians.

Montoursville downed Canton, 67-10. Gable Grebs pinned Timmy Ward in 2:57 at 160 pounds, Charlie Steinbacher, Gavin Hoffman and Daulton Tubbs each picked up six point falls. Garrett Storch had a 14-0 major dec. over Caleb Schans at 182.

Four Athens wrestlers picked up falls in a 57-18 win over Wellsboro. Kyler Stezer defeated Brock Hamblin 10-5. Robert Brown pinned Keegan Braund for Wellsboro.

• In girls swimming, Jersey Shore defeated Shamokin, 92-84. The Bulldogs’ 200 free relay team of Jordan O’Connor, Meaghan Keegan, Kendra White and Emma Butzler broke the Shamokin pool record in 1:57.81 that was previously held by current Jersey Shore coach Jenna Brooks.

Coming off a Pennsyl­vania State Athletic Con­ference tournament championship, the Lock Haven wrestling team has moved up in the national rankings. The Bald Eagles moved to No. 22 in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll and they jumped to No. 17 in the InterMat Dual Meet Rankings.

• In college football, Bucknell defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson added All-American accolades to his already impressive resume when he was announced as a 2017 Associated Press FCS second-team All-American selection.

The 2017 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and a four-time All-Patriot League selection, Anderson is Bucknell’s 57th All-American.

• In the midst of their best start in six years, the Lycoming College men’s basketball team moved up three spots from 12th to a school-record ninth in the latest D3hoops.com poll.

The top-10 ranking is the highest in program history, as the Warriors (9-0 overall, MAC Common­wealth 4-0) are off to their best start since 2011-12 when that team started a school-record 12-0.

MAC Commonwealth foe Albright also received 12 votes in the poll.
