College roundup: First-place Bucknell rolls past Holy Cross

Zach Thomas scored 18 points with six rebounds and Bucknell beat Holy Cross 77-56 on Saturday to extend its winning streak to six.

Thomas, the Patriot League’s scoring and rebounding leader, made 4 of 7 from the field and 9 of 11 free throws with Nana Foulland adding 14 points and seven rebounds. Stephen Brown scored 10 points for the Bison (13-8, 7-1), who are alone in first place.

Malik Carter and Jeremiah Worthem combined for 39 points as Mansfield snapped an eight-game losing streak with a key 92-85 PSAC East win at Bloomsburg.

Carter paced Mansfield (5-11, 4-9 PSAC) with 20 points, connecting on 7-11 field goals and 5-6 free throws. Worthem totaled 19 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Penn College fell on the road to Morrisville, 97-72. Spencer Bartron led the Wildcats with 19 points and Robert Young Jr. and James Bullock both chipped in 14 each.

• Kate Walker scored a career-high 25 points and Bucknell utilized a balanced scoring effort to overcome a two-player attack by Holy Cross with a 71-47 win in a Patriot League women’s basketball matchup.

Brielle Kelly scored a game-high 30 points to lead Mansfield to a key 63-53 PSAC East victory over Bloomsburg in the Mounties’ first win at Nelson Field House since 1986.

It marked just the second time that Mansfield has ever defeated the Huskies on the road.

Penn College lost to Morrisville, 78-51. Tori Wolfe led Penn College with 16 points and Loyalsock grad Cassi Kuhns chipped in 12.

• Drew Phipps knocked off No. 16 C.J. LaFragola in overtime, and No. 14 Tyler Smith improved to 10-0 in dual action, but Bucknell fell Brown, 18-13.

Lycoming College crowned two MAC Conference champions in Hadyn Swartwood and Garett Wesneski. Swartwood won his second MAC title at 157 pounds pinning Messiah’s Kevin Edwards. Wesneski with an 11-0 win over Delaware Valley’s Marc Isaac in the 285-pound bracket.

The No. 23/18 Lock Haven University wrestling team won nine of 10 bouts and rolled to a dominating 40-6 win over host George Mason. The Bald Eagles (8-1, 2-0 EWL) won the first nine bouts and raced out to a 40-0 lead before forfeiting at 285 pounds.

Penn College went 1-1 at its own tri-meet, beating Bergen Community College, 29-6, before losing to Aflred State, 35-21. Daniel Bergeron put the Wildcats ahead for good against Bergen with a 17-3 technical fall at 157 pounds.

• McKenna Zeller and Callan Jordan each picked up two first-place finishes to lead the Lycoming College swim teams at King’s (Pa.). The women fell to King’s (Pa.), 177-84 and defeated FDU-Florham, 168-76. The men fell 174-87 to King’s (Pa.) and beat FDU-Florham, 177-76.

The Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team was topped by Lehigh, 155-133. Chris Devlin and Chadd Cummings combined for five of the Bison’s six wins. Seven Bison combined to win nine individual events to help Bucknell women hand the Mountain Hawks (6-2, 4-1 Patriot League) their first conference loss, 171-129.
