Local roundup: Muncy wrestlers dominate Shore
Muncy’s six pins catapulted the Indians to a 69-9 victory over Jersey Shore Monday night in wrestling. After forfeits from 106 to 126, Bryce Vollman and Joe Klock got back-to-back pins, Ethan and Noah Gush got pins at 152 and 160, and Hunter Poust and Coty Steele pinned at 220 and 285. Jersey Shore’s Kyle Tomb got a decision at 170 and Hunter O’Conner pinned at 195.
• In girls basketball, Williamson defeated Troy, 52-14. Emylee Yusko led the Warriors with 18 points, and Mary Stager added eight.
Hannah Kaufman and Averie Hess scored 12 and 11 points respectively in Jersey Shore’s 54-24 win over Milton. Alyssa Byers led Milton scoring with 13 points.
Megan Zimmerman scored 16 in Warrior Run’s 53-24 win over Muncy. Hayden Divers had 10 and Sydney Hoffman added eight for the Defenders. Makenna Snyder led Mucny with nine points.
Hughesville’s 30-point first quarter led to a 64-22 win over Towanda. Emily Akers led the Spartans with 23 points and Alisha McKinley had 16.
Shayna McNamee scored 21 points in St. John Neumann’s 52-38 win at Montgomery. Riley Fry scored 16 with 10 rebounds in the loss.
• In boys basketball, Zach Rentzel scored 16 and Camden Route had 14 as Canton won 62-32 over Montgomery. Brennan Bailey scored 13 for Canton.
• In men’s basketball, Missouri State senior Alize Johnson from St. John Neumann was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, his second such honor this season.
In two games last week, Johnson averaged 18.5 points and 15.0 rebounds, shooting 48 percent. He logged game highs with 21 points and 16 rebounds in MSU’s win over Indiana State on Sunday, making 7-of-11 shots and sharing team-high honors with two assists. He also converted multiple 3-pointers for the third game in a row and extended his streak of consecutive double-doubles to seven games. Johnson also notched 16 points and 14 rebounds at Evansville on Wednesday.
Johnson leads the nation in defensive rebounds per game (8.47) and is sixth nationally in total rebounds per game (11.6).
Missouri State (14-5, 4-2 MVC) hosts Valparaiso Wednesday.
