Local college roundup: MU women clinch first PSAC playoff berth in 11 years

In an unrelenting team effort, the Mansfield University women’s basketball defeated Cheyney, 63-55, to earn its first playoff berth since the 2006-07 season.

“It was an overall great team effort, and everyone contributed in a positive way,” said coach Mike Whitling. “The girls stayed composed in a high-intensity situation and showed great resiliency not only throughout the game but over the course of this season.”

Mary Kate Rumbaugh led Mansfield with 14 points while freshman Mia Leonard had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Bucknell’s Kyi English scored 18 points to lead the Bison to a 57-52 Patriot League win over American.

Kaitlyn Slagus had a double-double for Bucknell of 12 points, 17 rebounds and Catherine Romaine added 11 rebounds.

Lock Haven closed out its season with an 84-64 loss against Kutztown. LHU honored its two seniors: Annie Dombrowski and Kayla Henderson.

Henderson le the Bald Eagles wtih 20 points and Rayah Fink added 15. Bink Redman had a team-high 12 rebounds.

• Ra’eese Hunt and Scott Brown were honored before Lock Haven’s game as seniors and came away with an 85-62 win over Kutztown in men’s basketball.

Hunt had a huge game with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double. Matt Cerruti added 10 points and five boards for the Bald Eagles.

Andreas Katopodis and Gerasimos Koutoufas combined for 30 points to lead Mansfield to a 67-55 PSAC East win over Cheyney in the season finale.

Katopodis connected on four 3-pointers to lead Mansfield in scoring with 16 points. Koutoufas was just shy of a double-double posting 14 points and nine boards. Matt Tamanosky added nine points with Malik Carter and Jeremiah Worthem each chipping in eight points. Carter also recorded nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

• In college baseball, Mansfield split a doubleheader with Assumption, winning falling in game one, 7-1, and winning the second game, 6-5. In the second game, Tyler Guidos picked up the win, while Colby Schearer had a triple and three RBIs in the sixth inning.

• Lycoming junior goalkeeper Michael Tenant led a stout Lycoming College men’s lacrosse defense with 12 saves, as it forced 20 turnovers and shut down Gwynedd Mercy in an 8-1 non-conference win.

Andrew Ream led the Warriors with four goals and sophomore Drew Collins posted two.

Bucknell handed No. 18/20 Colgate its first loss of the season, 13-10.

Will Sands had three goals and four assists, Connor O’Hara added four goals and Sean O’Brien scored three goals.

• For the second straight day the Bucknell baseball team took the game all the way into the late innings against Duke, but the bottom of the eighth once again proved decisive as the Blue Devils plated two runs to snap a tie and defeat the Bison, 6-4.

• In men’s tennis, Duc Dang picked up his first win of the season at No. 6 singles, but Lycoming College fell to Mount Aloysius College, 8-1.

• In women’s indoor track and field, Laurel Moyer, a Central Mountain graduate, of the Lock Haven University women’s team proved to the PSAC why she held the No. 1 seed in the 5,000-meter race going into the championship meet as she won the event by five seconds.

She crossed the line in 17:36.09 which was nearly 10 seconds faster than her season best time. Rashana Tompkins also made noise for the Bald Eagles, as she became the first LHU woman to dip under the nine second barrier in the 60-meter hurdles, boasting a time of 8.94 seconds.

Bloomsburg’s Kirsten O’Malley, a Montoursville grad, earned a third-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.74 meters to earn an NCAA provisional mark on Day 1 of the PSAC Indoor Championships.

• In women’s swimming, Lock Haven completed the final day of the four-day PSAC Championships. Kristin Allen and Raechel Rodriguez once again led the way for LHU as they qualified for the finals in their respective events. Allen was able to qualify for the finals in the 200-yard Backstroke, placing 17th with a season best time of 2:09.63. Rodriguez was able to qualify for the finals by placing in 21st in the 200-yard Breaststroke, knocking over five seconds off of her previous season-best time to clock in at 2:29.91.

Bucknell moved up to fifth in the team standings on the second day of the ECAC Championships. Two relay teams raced to third-place finishes while three Bison swam in the ‘A’ finals of their respective events. On the strength of those performances, Bucknell will enter the final day of the ECAC championship meet with 211.5 points, a half point back of fourth and 13.5 outside of third.

Caroline Edelman earned Bucknell’s highest individual finish to date, taking fifth in the 100 butterfly.
