Local roundup: Lewisburg girls earn PIAA berth

In girls basketball, Lewisburg outscored Selinsgrove by 24 after the first quarter as it pulled away for a 46-29 win in the opening round of the District 4 Class AAAA playoffs.

With the win, Lewisburg (21-4) clinched a second straight berth into the PIAA playoffs and will play the Athens/Danville winner in the semifinals, a game that was postponed until Saturday.

Grace Kelleher led the Green Dragons with 13 points, four steals and three assists and Bethany Rippon added 13 points. Emily Sholly notched six points, five rebounds, four blocks and three steals and Nikki Cho totaled four points, seven rebounds and three steals while playing lockdown defense.

• Defending District 4 Class AAA champion Hughesville went on the road and thumped HAC-III champion Mount Carmel, 55-45, in the quarterfinals for a second straight year.

Hughesville (13-10) took two of three games against Mount Carmel (17-7) this season, the only HAC team to beat it twice, and earned a spot in next week’s semifinals against Loyalsock. The Spartans won their 30th playoff game over the last 12 years and are in the semifinals for a third straight year.

Matt Myers ignited Hughesville, scoring 21 points and helping give it an early lead it never relinquished. Taylor Mason had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks while Isaiah Savage and Nick Rouhoff sparked a stingy defense. Pat Rogers added five rebounds and five assists and Hughesville led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter before pulling away in the last three minutes after the Tornadoes had cut it to five.

• The Lock Haven University swimming team completed day two of the four-day Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.

Carly Ray competed in the morning in the 200-yard freestyle and set a new season high. Ray entered the championships with her best time of the year being 2:07.98, but was able to eclipse that time and set her new season high of 2:03.45.
