LHU baseball sweeps twinbill from D&E

Lock Haven (6-2) was able to win both ends of a doubleheader Sunday against Davis and Elkins (4-13) as the Bald Eagles won, 5-1 in game one and 13-7 in game two in college baseball.

In game one, Lock Haven was able to get on the board first when they scored two runs in the top of the second inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead thanks to RBI singles by Ethan Moore and Max Joseph.

After the teams traded runs in the third inning, Lock Haven added two more runs in the top of the fourth thanks to an RBI double by Moore and an RBI single by John Banes to jump ahead 5-1.

Penn College split on the second day in Myrtle Beach, beating New England, 2-1, and then falling, 10-1. In the first game, Cody Nelson threw five innings of one-hit ball before Alex Zelger was hit by a pitch to score the game-winning run in the eighth. In the second game, Brittan Kittle hit a solo homerun for the lone run.

• Bucknell’s Tyler Smith punched his ticket to his fourth consecutive NCAA tournament with a runner-up finish at 141 pounds at the EIWA Championships on Sunday.

Smith became the fourth Bison since the wrestling program was reinstated ahead of the 2006-07 season to qualify for NCAAs four times. David Marble (2007-10, 133), Andy Rendos (2007-10, 165) and Joe Stolfi (2013-16, 285) previously accomplished the feat.

Smith faced top-seeded Yianni Diakomilhalis of Cornell in the championship bout. Diakomilhalis, a freshman ranked third by Intermat, raced out to a 6-3 lead in the first period and never looked back, ultimately topping Smith by a 17-9 major decision. The loss snapped Smith’s winning streak at 17.
