Local roundup: NPM boys win play-in state game

The North Penn-Mansfield boys basketball team made a 3 1/2 hour trip worth it Tuesday night, defeating North Star, 72-59, on its home court in a Class AA state tournament play-in game. The Tigers (18-10) won their first state playoff game since 2011 and will play District 9 runner-up Ridgway (23-1) in Saturday’s first round, a rematch from last year.

Mansfield rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit and put together a spectacular 28-5 third-quarter run to take a lead it never relinquished. Brent Burleigh scored a career-high 26 points and made 14 of 16 free throw attempts. Burleigh was big in the third quarter, scoring 12 of his 26 points. Mansfield had good balance with Dylan Meyer scoring 17 points, Nick Kasper 11 and Garrett David 10.

The Tigers have just one starter back from last year’s team, but have won three playoff games and try and keep that streak going Saturday against Ridgway, a team that edged it in a first-round thriller a year ago.

• Despite cold temperatures and snowy conditions, the No. 25 Lock Haven women’s lacrosse team rolled to its third win of the season, beating g Wheeling Jesuit, 20-9.

Hayley Kilian led the offense with eight assists and has 105 career assists as she surpassed the 100-assist mark. Karli Gilbert netted five goals and Kate Hooper had a hat trick.

Lycoming sophomore Hailey Kimble tied a career-high with five goals, including two goals in a 26-second span late in the game, and junior Kelly McGinniss scored four goals and broke her two program records in draw controls as Lycoming opened the season with a 15-13 non-conference win over Marywood University. McGinniss’ 15 draw controls broke her own single-game school-record of 14.

• Four Lycoming players picked up singles and doubles wins as the women’s tennis team opened the spring season with an 8-1 non-conference win over Clarks Summit.

Lycoming sophomore Hannah Summerson, a South Williamsport grad, earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles after teaming up with sophomore Devinity Apollon at No. 1 doubles for a hard-fought 9-7 win.

• At the 49th U.S. National Indoor Championships at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, several Pennsylvania College of Technology archers scored well on both the regional and national levels.

In the women’s bowhunter division, Erica Gause scored 1,131 to rank second in the region and fourth in the nation. In men’s bowhunter, Nathaniel Haefka scored 1,158 to rank second in the region and fourth in the nation.
