Local roundup: Sullivan girls, boys both win consolations

In the District 4 Class A consolation game in girls basketball, Sullivan County had a convincing 61-23 win over Cowanesque Valley on Thursday evening.

Both teams advance to the state tournament. Sullivan, the third-place finishers, will play the District 11 runner-up to be determined while Cowanesque will play District 3 champion Lebanon Catholic.

Mykenzie Malacusky led Sullivan with 18 points and Stef Kramer added 16. CV was led by Brynn Williams’ five points.

• In boys basketball, Sullivan County won the District 4 Class A consolation game, defeating Meadowbrook Christian, 45-28.

The Griffins were led by Jesse Williams’ 12 points. Sam Carpenter and John Saxe both added nine.

• Lock Haven redshirt-sophomore Amir Hinton w as been named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East first team in men’s basketball.

Last year’s PSAC East Freshman of the Year, Hinton is now a two-time first-team selection.

Hinton averaged 23.4 points per game, which ranked second in the PSAC and 10th in Division II. His 585 points ranked third in the league, and he reached the 1,000-point mark this season, becoming the fastest player in PSAC history to do so.

Mansfield guard Malik Carter was a second team All-PSAC East selection. Carter led Mansfield and ranked 16th in the PSAC in scoring at 16.7 points a game. The senior was also second in the conference in steals (2.3 spg).

Carter posted nine games of 20 or more points including a season-high 31 points in a win at California. The guard also registered eight games with eight or more rebounds and posted a double-double against Kutztown.

UMass-Lowell redshirt-senior Jahad Thomas, a Williamsport grad, was named America East All-Conference first team. It’s the second consecutive first-team selection for Thomas. He currently leads the league with 21.2 points per game and 36.3 minutes per game.

• Lock Haven sophomore Rileigh Devine earned All-PSAC honors as a second-team selection at guard.

Devine averaged a team-best 10.9 points per game. She scored in double-figures 15 different times including a season-best 30-point effort vs. Millersville on January 17.
