Local wrestling: Central Mountain has 5 wrestlers advance to PIAAs

Central Mountain finished third in the team standings with 122.5 points behind Erie Cathedral Prep (189) and Mifflin County (125.5) as five wrestlers advance to the Class AAA state Tournament starting Thursday.

Central Mountain’s Johnathan Schreffler and Seth Andrus earned runner-up finishes. Schreffler fell 8-1 to Mifflin County’s Christian Fisher in the 113-pound final while Andrus lost 3-2 to Jeffrey Boyd of Erie McDowell at 132.

Logan Long defeated Kishawn Higgins, 5-1, at 145 in the consolation finals. At 170 Tanner Weaver defeated Ian Klingler of Philipsburg-Osceola 10-5, and Malik Houtz was a 3-1 winner over Kross Todaro from Mifflin County for a third-place finish.

• For just the second time in school history, the Lock Haven wrestling team became EWL Conference Champions and the Bald Eagles had six wrestlers qualify for the NCAA tournament.

The Bald Eagles had three champions, a runner-up and two third-place finishers.

Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry won his 100th career match, becoming the 20th Lock Haven wrestler to do so, and qualified for NCAAs at 149 pounds as he won the individual title with an 8-3 decision.

Also champions were Corey Hazel at 184 pounds and Alex Klucker at 157. Kulcker won with a pin in 52 seconds.

Lock Haven’s Chance Marsteller (165 pounds) and Tristan Sponseller (197) both took third place at their respective weights. Thomas Haines qualified at 285 pounds.

Bucknell’s Tyler Smith advanced to the semifinals in the 141-pound weight class at the EIWA Championships with a pair of convincing victories.
