Benner, Helminiak earn NEAC tennis honors

Garrett Benner and Stephen Helminiak made program history when they draped NEAC men’s tennis championship gold medals around their necks Sunday at the NEAC men’s tennis championship. Penn College coach John Machak also became the first coach in program history to earn NEAC Coach of the Year honors, which he shared with Penn State Berks’ Scott Yarnell.

Benner won No. 3 singles after knocking off the second seed, Brandon Zweiback of Penn State Abington, 6-3, 7-6, and topped the one seed, Berks’ Curtis Uhle, 7-5, 6-2 in the championship. Helminiak took No. 6 singles after a 6-1, 6-4 win over Abington’s Alex Sphabmixay and a 6-3 7-5 victory over Shane Leaf, of Berks, in the championship match.

• The Lewisburg tennis team enters the District 4 Team Tournament this week as the top seed coming off an undefeated regular season. The Green Dragons face Towanda in the tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon at Williamsport at 2 p.m.

Milton will play Danville in the other quarterfinal at Williamsport on Tuesday at noon. Muncy will host a pair of quarterfinals with Central Columbia taking on Mifflinburg at 1 p.m., and Wellsboro facing Hughesville at 3 p.m.

The semifinals and final will be played Tuesday, May 8, at a site and time to be determined.

• The Lycoming softball team closed out its season being swept in a doubleheader by Misericordia, 5-4 and 13-4. Taylor Gessner finished her freshman season with the Warriors on a 10-game hitting streak, going 3 for 6 with an RBI over the two games. Ashley Schoenstadt drove in a pair of runs in the opener, and Rachael Shady drove in two more in the nightcap for the Warriors.

• Lock Haven capped its four-game PSAC Eastern Division series with Millersville with a 4-0 college baseball loss. Lock Haven starting pitcher Avery Eddy, a Hughesville graduate, scattered four hits over the first five innings, but Millersville starter Drew Miller and reliever Mike Mock combined on a five-hit shutout.

• The Penn College golf team finished third at the NEAC Championships at the Williamsport Country Club on Sunday, after losing a tie-breaker with Rutgers-Camden for second place. Austin Moscariello (first team), Ned Baumbach (second team), Ben Fails (third team) and Brian Whelan (third team) were all named to the All-NEAC team. Baumbach and Moscariello shot matching two-day totals of 158 to tie for fifth place.

Lycoming junior Alec Sabatino finished in a tie for 32nd after posting a second-round 91 to finish with a career-best 181 to lead the Warriors’ men’s golf team at the two-day MAC Commonwealth Championship. Sabatino had two birdies during his Sunday round, helping him finish with a 46 on the front nine and a 45 on the back after he posted a 90 on the first day of the tournament.

Junior J.P. Raftery earned his third consecutive All-Patriot League medal, and junior Connor O’Brien and sophomore Peter Bradbeer did so for the first time, highlighting Bucknell’s weekend in a fifth-place team finish at the 2018 Patriot League Men’s Golf Championship. Bradbeer shot 224 (69-81-74) over 54 holes to finish in a tie for sixth place. Raftery, who was the league runner-up in each of his first two seasons, finished ninth this time with a 227 (75-74-78).
