Bucktail rallies to top Muncy

After falling victim to a no hitter in its season opening shutout loss to Galeton, Bucktail quickly fell behind again yesterday when Mid-Penn rival Muncy jumped out to a six-run lead after two innings.

Bucktail senior Makenzi Brennan gave the Bucks their first base hit of the year before eventually scoring on an Emily Cross bases loaded sacrifice fly to center-field, scoring Brennan.

And all of a sudden the same winning atmosphere that propelled Bucktail all the way into the postseason a year ago came rushing back. Bucktail chipped away the lead in the bottom of the fourth and held on for an eventual 8-7 win over the Indians on Thursday.

In that fourth inning, the bases were again loaded, this time for Brennan who picked up her second hit by crushing a Rory Oden pitch to right center. The hit scored Cowfer and Kayli Casper as the home team cut the deficit to 6-3.

Several batters later the Bucks loaded the bases yet again as Emily Cross served up a hard hit that found its way through the infield, scoring Brennan and Ann Cowfer as the Muncy lead was down to one.

Muncy was led by Makenna Snyder, who went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBIs and Jenifer Frederick, who was 2 for 4. Isabella Hitesman also had two RBIs for the Indians.

With the bats suddenly abundant at the plate Bucktail’s Myka Poorman would allow just one single and one walk from the third through sixth.

Tessa Cowfer picked up her second hit of the game with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth leading to Casper at the plate. The left-handed Casper picked up Bucktail’s hardest hit of the game when she had a shot to right center and sprinted to third for a game-tying RBI. Sophomore Emma Intallura hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Casper, giving Bucktail their first lead of the season.

The Bucks registered what proved to be the game winning run when Cross stretched a single into a double in the bottom of the sixth inning, moving to third on an error. Poorman hit a sacrifice fly to center to give her team an 8-6 lead.

Muncy’s Makenna Snyder hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning, Poorman’s only earned run of the game

“Those last five innings I think gave us a glimpse of who we want to be” said Bucktail coach Mike Poorman. “It all started with a hit (from Brennan) and we came together and played the way that we are certainly capable of.

“We still gave them too many outs in the beginning of the game, we have plenty to work on, but it’s hard to ask for a whole lot more when you come from 6-0 down and get a win against a team like Muncy.”
