Golf tip of the week: Long irons require a wood-type of swing

PHOTO PROVIDED Be patient, smooth and swish through the impact zone.

Long irons require a more sweeping motion, like a fairway wood. Place the ball more up in the stance at address, near the left heel area or right heel area for the left-handed golfer.

Golfers who have trouble hitting the longer irons are usually impatient and throw the clubhead at the ball. The longer clubs travel on a larger circumference than does the shorter irons. This causes a golfer to get anxious and feel as if the club is lagging, they then force the club to the ball, destroying the natural arc.

Try swinging the club with a smooth motion as if you were slinging mud off your club. Allow the club to build up speed and swish through the hitting area.

Don’t forget to enjoy this great game called golf.
