Local roundup: Waltman strikes out 10 to lift Warrior Run softball

Madi Waltman struck out 10 batters and only yielded two extra base hits as Warrior Run continued its perfect season with a 9-3 win over Milton in softball on Friday afternoon.

Haley Miller had two singles and a double and Gina Beyer, Waltman, Megan Herriman and Jade Swartz all hit two singles each.

Hughesville freshman Sarah Wertz went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and also earned the win as Hughesville thumped Wellsboro, 17-5, in five innings.

Megan Ryder went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs. Emily Watts and Chylee Stroup also doubled and Olivia Miller had two hits. Chelsie English hit a two-run home run for Wellsboro and Sydney Tremper had two hits.

South Williamsport was down to its final out at Bloomsburg when Natalya Steppe came up huge and hit a go-ahead, two-run single. Steppe’s clutch hit sparked a four-run rally and South rallied to win 7-6 after pitcher Emily Hennigan stranded the winning runners in the bottom of the seventh. Hennigan struck out seven and also had two hits and three RBIs while Sydney Bachman went 2 for 4.

• Tyler Shadle and Vaughan Ault both led Montgomery’s offense by going 2 for 3 and the Red Raiders defeated Benton, 8-3, in high school baseball.

Gage Yohn and Brayden Strouse combined on the mound to scatter six hits.

Logan Edmonds and Dane Armson combined on a 1-hit gem as Loyalsock defeated Selinsgrove 3-1 and won its second straight. Edmonds struck out nine in six innings and Armson threw a hitless seventh to record his first varsity save. Edmonds allowed only a first-inning single.

Muncy had more than three times as hits as Millville, but walks and errors hurt it in a 10-5 loss. The Indians outhit the Mid-Penn leaders, 10-3 but a five-run Quaker seventh inning put the game out of reach. Christian Good went 3 for 4 with a double and brother Coleman Good also had two hits and a double. Grady Oden added two hits for the Indians.

Brandon Dyer and Dylan Moll both had big games and Montoursville scored three runs on a seventh-inning throwing error as it rallied past Mifflinburg and won, 5-4.

Dyer went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Moll was 2 for 2 with a double and two runs. Montoursville loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and won when a slow roller hit toward second base was thrown way past the first baseman, allowing all three runners to score.

Drew King won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2, and AJ Swanson earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.

• Mansfield dropped both games of a doubleheader to Shippensburg in college baseball, losing 20-5 and 16-1.

Loyalsock grad Tommy Baggett went 5 for 9 with five RBIs for Shippensburg. In the second contest, Mansfield allowed 12 runs in the bottom of the third to let a tied game slip away.

Tyler Guidos had a home run in the second game for Mansfield.

• Mansfield lost both games of a doubleheader to Indiana, 9-1 and 5-3, in college softball.

Anastasia Hester led Mansfield in both games, going 2 for 2 with a double in game one and 2 for 4 with a double and RBI in the second game.
