ROUNDUP: Cioffi has big day at plate, on the mound in Neumann win

Jaiden Cioffi went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, earned the win on the mound and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out, third-inning jam Saturday as St. John Neumann defeated Benton, 8-3, and won its season opener. Adam Helminiak also went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Jeffrey Hamilton had a hit and two RBIs. Neumann built a 3-0 first-inning lead and Cioffi’s third-inning escape provided a lift as it scored five runs in the fifth and took a seven-run lead.

Dakotah Snyder threw a complete-game and struck out seven as Lewisburg took advantage of eight walks and defeated Line Mountain, 7-3. The Green Dragons (1-2) stole nine bases and Aaron Hoover had three. Aaron Stosser walked three times, scored a run and stole a base and Lewisburg took a 3-0 first-inning lead.

Hughesville pounded out 10 hits and pitchers Zack Murray and Jacob Corson combined for 10 strikeouts, but timely hits eluded it in a 7-2 loss to Mount Carmel. Jaret Stroup, Jared Snyder, Hunter Wentzel and Clayton Poust all had two hits but the Spartans stranded 12 runners in scoring position and fell behind 3-0 in the first inning.

Warrior Run scored eight runs in the first two innings as Kade Meyer threw a six-hitter and added two hits in a 9-6 win over Millville. Tyler Pick had two hits for a consecutive day and also had two RBIs. Warrior Run (2-2) built an 8-1 lead after two innings.

South Williamsport outhit Southern Columbia, 10-6, but three errors and 11 walks helped the Tigers beat the Mounties, 14-5. Luke Winner and Gideon Green each had a pair of hits for the Mounties.

Gage Yohn went 3 for 3 as Montgomery defeated Sullivan County 12-2. Yohn had four runs scored and Brayden Strouse went 2-2 with 2 runs scored. Trevor Miller pitched a complete game.

• Madison Jean threw a 5-hit shutout and added two hits offensively as Montoursville blanked Southern Columbia, 4-0. Madison Shaffer also had two hits and Jordan McCarthy continued her torrid start, hitting a triple before being intentionally walked. The Warriors (2-1) scored three first-inning runs.

Taryn Lambert and Sarah Wertz combined on a 1-hitter as Hughesville blanked Benton, 11-0 in five innings. Megan Ryder had two hits for the Spartans (2-1) and Jenna Davis hit a 2-run double. Shayna Ragan and Chylee Stroup both added two RBIs.

• Lycoming fell to Messiah 11-9. Andrew Ream led the Warriors with four goals and an assist. Drew Collins had three goals, and Garrett Huff and Aiden Kirkendall both scored one.

• Ashley Gochenauer and Alex O’Herrick scored five goals apiece as Lock Haven knock ed off Mercyhurst 16-7. Katie Costanza added a hat-trick and Lauren Girardi had 10 saves.

Bucknell’s comback effort fell just short to Holy Cross in a 12-11 loss. The Bison scored the last six points of the game. Sarah Galzerano and Sarah Dohler each had a hat-trick and Morgan Steinhacker added two goals.

Kelly McGinniss scored her fifth straight game with a hat-trick, but Lycoming fell to 13th-ranked Messiah 17-7. Hailey Kimble scored two goals and Kayla DiJoseph and Jordan Lazarich had one goal.

• Bucknell swept first two games of three game series with Lafayette. winning game one in walk-off fashon as JohnPaul Bell scored on a wild pitch. Dominic Toso went 3-3 with an RBI at the plate while Connor Van Hoose pitched a complete game and recorded nine strikeouts. Bell also had a two-run home run in game two and led Bison to a 9-5 win.

• Lycoming was swept by Alvernia (4-0) and (3-1) in a double header. Liz Nace pitched six innings and struck out five, Ashley Schoenstadt went 2-3 at the plate in game one. Shoenstadt accounted for both of Lycoming’s runs in the second game as she went 1-3 with a run and and RBI.

• Selinsgrove grad, Rob Smith won both his singles and doubles matches, but Lycoming fell to Arcadia 7-2. It is Smith’s third straight match he swept singles and doubles play with Mitch Weary.

• South Williamsport grad, Hannah Summerson won No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1, and No. 1 doubles with Devinity Apollon 8-2 to lead Lycoming to a 6-3 win over Arcadia.
