BEA drops Shore to win 6th straight

WINGATE — Bald Eagle Area is entering the final act of the season with a boost in its confidence.

They’re riding a six-game win streak, and just dropped the Jersey Shore Bulldogs, 5-1, at home to increase its record to 14-3 on the year.

“I think we played really well in our outfield tonight,” Bald Eagle Area coach Don Lucas said. “I think our centerfielder (Lacee Barnhart) just took away a couple of hits that looked like they were going to fall in.

“And that’s the way we’ve been playing all year. Anytime you win all three phases of the game, hitting, pitching and defense, things should go well for you.”

BEA freshman pitcher Madison Peters threw five strikeouts, and had a shutout going into the bottom of the seventh with two outs.

“She’s only a freshman, so it’s nice have a ninth grader who can go against a great team like Jersey Shore,” Lucas said of Peters. “I’m proud of her.”

After Lacee Barnhart recorded a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, Tobi Yarrison recorded an RBI single to put BEA ahead, 1-0.

Yarrison, BEA’s usual catcher, had the day off in the field and was the team’s designated player. She went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. She’s been cracking the ball all season.

“She leads the team in hits,” Lucas said of Yarrison. “She does everything you’d expect out of a senior. She’s been doing that for us all year and I’m very happy for her.”

Yarrison smacked a double in the third inning to load second and third base for the Eagles. Next batter up, Madison Peters (2-3, two RBIs) recorded an RBI single to extend BEA’s lead, 2-0. Yarrison then stole home later in the inning to extend BEA’s lead, 3-0.

Back-to-back RBI singles by Yarrison and Peters in the fifth extended BEA’s lead, 5-0.

Bald Eagle Area’s defense regulated Jersey Shore to five hits. In the sixth, centerfielder Lacee Barnhart made a a running-catch in stride to rob Brianna Herman of a base hit, and fired it to first for the double play to close the inning.

“She’s only a sophomore, and she’s been doing that since she came on the team as a ninth grader,” Lucas said of Barnhart. “She’s a heck of an athlete, a heck of a ball player and I’m glad she plays for us.”

In its last two games, Jersey Shore hitters have struggled to find gaps in its opponents’ defense.

“Everything we hit is right at them,” Jersey Shore coach Randy Smith said. “It’s been the case the last two games, even when we do hit the ball solid they’re just making the great plays.”

Arizona Shreck recorded Jersey Shore’s lone run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, cutting Jersey Shore’s deficit, 5-1.

The Bulldogs have struggled to generate offense lately. They were shutout against Shamokin on Tuesday, 6-0, and were limited to one run yesterday. Both games were Jersey Shore’s only defeats as they slid to 12-2 on the year.

“I don’t know where our bats went,” Smith said. “But we’ll rebound. We have some work to do definitely.”

Jersey Shore returns Friday to host Montoursville.

“They’re a decent team,” Smith said of the Warriors. “They have good pitching and they’re coming along.”
