Stieber to appear at Canton

Lyle Wesneski was perusing Instagram one night when he came across a post from Logan Stieber saying he had open camp dates for the summer if anyone was interested.

The Canton wrestling coach had always thought about bringing a camp for wrestlers of all ages to Canton, so he decided to email Stieber, the four-time NCAA champ from Ohio State, and see if he’d be interested. It didn’t take long for the two to work out the details, and Stieber will be helping instruct wrestlers at the 1st Annual Canton Warrior Wrestling Camp on Monday and Tuesday.

“My goal is always to think outside the box, so I said ‘why not take a shot at somebody like this?'” Wesneski said. “He’s been awesome to work with. I thought it would be cool for this area to get a guy like him here.”

The camp runs Monday and Tuesday at Canton High School and is open to wrestlers in fifth through 12th grades. Each day of the camp will feature two sessions, the first running from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the second from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Stieber is scheduled to be at both days of the camp. The former four-time NCAA champion just recently qualified for the United States World Team. Two years ago he was a World Champion at 61 kilograms.

“If you don’t get excited to work with a four-time national champ and a world champ, maybe wrestling isn’t for you,” Wesneski said. “I’m hoping it sparks an interest in the sport and the camp.”

Wesneski said high school wrestlers from all around the Northern Tier League are already scheduled to attend the camp. There are still plenty of open slots for the camp, and wrestlers can show up Monday morning and sign up as well.

He’s hoping the camp helps bring some interest to the sport in Canton. He believes Stieber will help reinforce some of the technique they’ve been teaching their kids.

“It’ll make sense now coming from a World Team member,” Wesneski said. “But then also, he’s going to have a lot of cool things to show the kids to help them.”

The former Hodge Trophy winner will help instruct campers from all positions. There will be focus on top of turning tough opponents with tilts and legs, and focus on leg attacks from the neutral position among other areas of focus.

“Wrestling is ever evolving and changing. Logan was very tough on his feet and an absolute hammer on top,” Wesneski said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the kids. Even if they can take two or three things out of it in two days, that would be awesome. I’m hoping it’s a great experience for the kids.”
