Cutters fall despite 3 homers

The Williamsport Crosscutters hit three home runs, including two off rehabbing big leaguer Jason Vargas, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped the first of a three-game series to the Brooklyn Cyclones, 5-3.

Ben Aklinski, Jonathan Guzman and Brayan Gonzalez each hit a solo home run for Williamsport, the last of which tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning. Brooklyn rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the win.

Williamsport hasn’t won back-to-back games since June 22 and 24.

Vargas, a 13-year Major League veteran with 87 career wins, has been on the New York Mets’ disabled list for three weeks dealing with a strained calf. Aklinski picked up Williamsport’s first run when he hit a solo home run leading off the second inning.

Guzman hit his second home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning. His solo home run came on the pitch right after Jesus Henriquez was picked off first base.

Gonzalez’s home run was a lined shot to center field off Cyclones reliever Kevin Smith.

Jose Jimenez took the loss for Williamsport.
