Cutters start road series with a victory

The Williamsport Crosscutters opened their three-game road series at Mahoning Valley with a 4-1 win over the Scrappers on Monday night.

Williamsport and Mahoning Valley were deadlocked at 1-1 after two innings until Williamsport (17-25) broke out with a three-run top of the eighth inning to take the lead and held off the Scrappers in their final two at bats.

Madison Stokes led Williamsport by going 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Edwin Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a double, triple, three RBIs and scored a run and Rafael Marchan was 2 for 4 with two doubles and a run scored.

Williamsport’s Brayan Gonzalez added a single.

Mahoning Valley scored its only run thanks to a home run by Henry Pujols, who went 3 for 4. He also had Mahoning Valley’s only extra-base hit.

Rafael Carvajal earned his first win on the mound to improve to 1-1 as he threw 2 2/3 innings, only allowing a hit and striking out five. Jhordany Mezquita, who started the game, also struck out five batters.

The Crosscutters return home to Bowman Field on Thursday against West Virginia for three games.
