Local roundup: Montoursville seniors advance in Eastern Regional tourney

In the Little League Senior Baseball Eastern Regionals, Montoursville opened the tournament with a convincing 8-2 win over Maryland.

With the win, Montoursville advances to the winners’ bracket semifinals today at 10 a.m. against New Jersey, which defeated Massachusetts.

If Montoursville wins on Saturday, the winners’ bracket final is set for Monday night.

The third inning helped propel Montoursville as it scored five runs in the third to go ahead, 7-0, over Maryland. In the first inning, Nate Ewing was walked and later scored on a wild pitch to give Montoursville its first run of the game.

Jonathan Zayas threw three innings to start the game and struck out eight, as Zayas, Nate Ewing and Maddix Dalena combined for 13 strikeouts.

Nate Ewing, Jaxon Dalena and Mason Sechrist all had hits for Montoursville.

• At the Mid-Atlantic Regionals, West End defeated Gilderland, New York, 13-4, on Friday afternoon. After a bit of a back-and-forth game through the first five innings, West End’s offense exploded for nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away.

West End out-hit New York, 18-8.

Tanner Esposito led West End by going 3 for 3 and Ryan Jolin went 3 for 4. Ethen Strkyer was 2 for 4 with a home run, Eric Holz was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Brandon Loner was 2 for 4 with a double.

Logan Edmonds also went 2 for 4.

West End plays Kennett Square today at 1 p.m.
