Mansfield to induct 4 into its Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame

MANSFIELD — The Mansfield University Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame will induct former men’s basketball coach Tom Ackerman, men’s basketball standout Ken Bianchi, track and cross country star Terry Stanley and longtime voice of the Mountaineers Chris Vaughn. The induction ceremony will be held at the Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame dinner on Friday, Oct. 19.

Ackerman was head coach of the men’s basketball program from 1989 to 1999 where he led Mansfield to 127 wins in his tenure. In 1997, Ackerman guided the Mountaineers to a PSAC East title, PSAC Championship, and NCAA Tournament berth coaching PSAC East Player of the Year Louis Judson and PSAC East Rookie of the Year Tommy Harvey.

Bianchi was a four-year member of the Mountaineer men’s basketball program, playing three seasons from 1964-67. He was a member of the 1964-65 team that won the NAIA District 19 title and advanced to the national championship tournament.

Stanley was a four-year letter winner in cross country and three-year letter winner in track and field before graduating in 1974. A distance specialist, Stanley held school records in the 3-mile and 6-mile runs. After Mansfield, Stanley qualified for the 1980 Olympic Marathon Trials and became one of just 20 runners in the world to run a sub 3-hour marathon during five different decades. Stanley held the world record for longest time span between marathon wins (1978-2012).

Vaughn began announcing men’s basketball games as the public address announcer in 1981. The following year, Vaughn started announcing Mountaineer football games and later added women’s basketball in the mid-1990s. He would announced other sports as his work scheduled allowed. Following his retirement in 2012, Vaughn announced field hockey and soccer games in the fall and baseball and softball games in the spring.
