Montour seniors fall in winners’ bracket final

Despite outhitting Delaware, the Montoursville senior all-stars fell to the consolation bracket of the East Regional with a 4-2 loss Monday.

Tied 1-1 after seven innings, Delaware scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Montoursville managed just one in the bottom half. Dylan Bower was 4 for 4 for Montoursville, and Nolan Ott scored both runs. Bower and Ryan Kessler each drove in a run.

Montoursville plays in the consolation bracket final today against West Deptford at 7 p.m. The winner plays for the championship Wednesday at 1 p.m.

• For the second year in a row, the Lycoming women’s lacrosse team was honored as an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrose Coaches Association Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad team, while both senior defender Catherine Burger and junior midfielder Kelly McGinniss were both recognized as part of the IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Roll.

The Warriors were one of 339 college teams to earn the honor. To qualify for the honor, the women’s lacrosse team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the academic year. The Warriors are one of six teams in the MAC Commonwealth to earn the honor along with Arcadia, Hood, Lebanon Valley, Messiah and Stevenson.

Five members of the Lock Haven women’s lacrosse team have been named to the IWLCA 2018 Zag Sports Division II Academic Honor Roll.

The Bald Eagles had Madison Eberly, Ashley Gochenaur, Emily Gerhart, Katie McDonough and Anneli Starry represent LHU with the academic honor.

• Mansfield University head sprint football coach John Evans has announced the addition of Kevin Short and Zen Bliss as assistants on the coaching staff.

“I’m excited to add these two experienced coaches to an already talented group of current coaches,” Evans said. “They both are excited and ready to work with their position groups.”

Short brings NFL experience, playing as a member of practice squads with the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams from 2015 to 2017. Short played two seasons at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas and earned an associates degree before transferring to the University of Kansas to play under head coach Charlie Weiss.

Short will be responsible for the receivers at Mansfield.

Bliss was most recently an assistant coach in charge of tight ends and running backs at Division III Thiel College before serving as a scout for the Columbus Lions of the National Arena League in Columbus, Georgia. Bliss also has coaching experience as an assistant with the Cedar Rapids Titans of the Indoor Football League, Division III Allegheny College, the Buffalo Lightning and the Erie Explosion of the American Indoor Football league.

Bliss earned an associates of applied science in information technology from the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville and a bachelors of applied science in business management from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

Bliss will direct the defensive line.
