Crosscutters rally falls short

Williamsport pitching combined to strike out 17 Mahoning Valley batters, setting a new season-high, but fell 6-5 in the series finale to the Scrappers on Wednesday night.

Keudy Bocio went 2 for 4 with his first two doubles of the season, driving in three runs for his first multi-RBI game. Jonathan Guzman finished 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored for the Cutters.

Francisco Morales allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings, allowing three walks and striking out six in the losing effort.

Austin Ross, Oscar Marcelino and Jose Jimenez combined to throw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, combining to strike out 11 batters and walk just two.

Ben Aklinski hit his fourth home run, going 1 for 5. It was his second home run against the Scrappers this season. The Cutters have hit six of their 19 home runs against Mahoning Valley.

The Cutters fall to 3-6 through the first nine meetings with the Scrappers. Williamsport and Mahoning Valley square off six more times this season, all in Williamsport in August.

Williamsport trailed 6-1 before Aklinski homered and Bocio hit a two-run double in the seventh inning. The Cutters left the tying run stranded at third base in the ninth inning.
