West End 16-18s win 1st game of the Babe Ruth World Series
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — A clutch hit by West End’s Cody Shimp lead West End, the Middle Atlantic region representatives, to a 3-1 victory over Crown Point, Ind., in the first game of the 2018 Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old World Series in Jamestown, N.Y.
Shimp’s game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning capped a comeback for West End who found themselves in a 1-0 deficit after the first inning. Crown Point’s Andrew Mild — who went 2 for 2 — scored his team’s only RBI, driving in Ben Fridrich.
West End started the rally in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Ethan Stryker, scoring Quinten Brown to tie the score at 1.
West End starting pitcher Isaac Snyder went four innings, allowing one run and five strikeouts. Kyle Caringi pitched two innings, holding Crown Point scoreless. Shimp, following his big hit, closed out the game for West End.
Crown Point’s Ryan Bolda, despite allowing three runs, had two strikeouts over 5 innings. Derek Lasky pitched one inning of relief, allowing no runs.
West End faces off against Onondaga today at 5 p.m.
