Dorner looks dominant in rain-shortened match

BRETT R. CROSSLEY/Sun-Gazette Correspondent South Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner returns a shot during a No. 1 singles match against Montoursville’s Maddy Reeves. Dorner won the match, 6-1 6-0.

South Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner was a little nervous for her match against Montoursville’s Maddy Reeves as two of the top teams in District 4 tennis got together on Thursday afternoon.

Dorner might have been nervous to start, dropping the first game against Reeves. After that game, the nationally-ranked player won every point after the loss to claim a 6-1, 6-0 win over Reeves.

The overall match was suspended after South Williamsport was able to take a 2-0 lead on Montoursville. A makeup date has yet to be scheduled.

Dorner has few, if any, weaknesses in her game, but her first serve gave her an advantage throughout the match. She got points with aces and forced Reeves to the back line as she attempted to return the serves.

“During the second game when I was serving I started to feel more confident in my serve,” Dorner said. “It definitely helps if you have a good serve. You can get a lot of free points or setup some good points with it.”

Dorner setup points and recorded them as she moved Reeves back-and-forth with her serves and well-placed returns. Dorner entered the season as the top player in District 4 and has her team sitting at six wins against no losses.

“We practiced a lot to get ready for this match,” Dorner said. “They are a tough team. I was a little nervous and shaky to start off, but it was good after a couple games.”

In the No. 3 singles match Lauren Peck defeated Alissa Aldinger 6-0, 6-1 before the rain started.

South Williamsport’s Lily Summerson led Montoursville’s Lydia Barbour, 6-3, 2-1 in their No. 2 singles match.

In doubles competition, South Williamsport’s Zoe Jackson and Ella Livorno led the No. 1 doubles match against Montoursville’s Kaitlyn Dawes and Jill Fitzwater, 7-5, 1-2. Montoursville’s Tori Kleese and Alex McKenna were ahead 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 at No. 2 doubles against Alanya McGovern and Jen Bowman.
