Local roundup: South Williamsport girls take Burke Tournament title

In girls soccer, South Williamsport’s Bella Green put home a Lela Warner pass with just 4 minutes, 42 seconds remaining in the game to give the Mounties a 3-2 win over Montoursville to win the Burke Tournament championship at Memorial Field.

The Mounties won a pair of games Saturday, beating Holy Redeemer in the semifinals, 4-2, thanks to a trio of goals from Elizabeth Manning. South followed that with a come-from-behind win over Montoursville for the tournament title.

Allyse Marchioni gave the Warriors a lead in the title game just 7 minutes in with a goal. But Hailey Neidig scored a tying goal and Green added the winner for the Mounties.

Lily Saul posted three goals as Montoursville topped Muncy, 10-0, in the Burke Tournament semifinal. Anna Schult added a goal and an assist for the Warriors.

Williamsport opened its girls soccer season in impressive fashion, scoring seven first-half goals and blanking Central Mountain, 8-0. Sammi Reeder scored three first-half goals and assisted on another while Kaylee Helmrich opened the scoring, as she scored twice and added three assists.

Aubrey Sechrist scored with 30 minutes remaining and Hannah Kauffman shined in goal as Jersey Shore recorded a strong season-opening win, blanking Warrior Run, 1-0.

Morgan Hopkins totaled three goals and CC Getz tallied three total assists as Hughesville won both of its games at the Central Columbia Labor Day tournament, first beating Berwick, 2-0, then topping Central Columbia, 4-3.

• In boys soccer, just 24 seconds after Montoursville’s Dominic Caputo tied the final of the Burke Tournament, Danville’s Ethan Cera put the Ironmen ahead for good for a 2-1 win over Montoursville and the Burke Tournament championship.

Montoursville went 1-1 in the season-opening tournament, posting a 4-0 win in the semifinals thanks to a hat trick from Angelo Silvagni and two assists from Colin Gorini.

The Warriors erased a 1-0 deficit in the final with Caputo’s goal before Cera scored the winner.

Collin Smith scored two first-half penalties and Grady Oden netted the game-clinching goal late in the match as Muncy opened its season with a 3-1 win over Shamokin. Pavel McMonigle stopped seven shots in goal for Muncy.

Lewisburg took both games at the Central York tournament, topping Waynesboro, 3-1, and then, Central York in penalty kicks, 5-4. In the first game, Ben Liscum, Anthony Bhangdia and James Koconis all notched goals for the Green Dragons.

• In cross country, Isabel Sagar (Loyalsock) and Lauren Trapani (Warrior Run) started their cross country seasons off with a first and second place finish, respectively, at the Bear Mountain Lock Haven Invitational. Sagar beat out Trapani by 29 seconds, while also setting a new course record, when she crossed the finish line in a time of 17:31.2. Trapani was not far behind at 18:00.4. Williamsport’s Lydia Smith took fourth (19:40.8). Emma Miller (5th, 19:49.8), Cameron Trapani (9th, 20:12.4) Mikaela Majcher (10th, 20:19.4) and Alyssa Hoffman (11th, 20:30.7) all from Warrior Run rounded out the top 11 for area girl runners.

Loyalsock’s Alejandro Qunitana was the lead boys runner with an eighth place finish in 16:32 and South Williamsport’s Port Habalar was 10th with a time of 16:32.16. Corbin Green (Central Mountain) and J. Henry Lyon (Williamsport) finished 12th and 13th, respectively, with times of 16:41.7 and 16:42.1.

• In women’s soccer, Alexis Bittel gave Mansfield an early lead, but Kaitlyn Eckley made the difference with a pair of free kick goals as Pitt-Johnstown stunned the Mounties, 2-1 in overtime.

Lycoming College fell to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference power Mount Aloysius, 3-0, in non-conference action.

Marah Foltz scored twice and sparked the Bald Eagles as Lock Haven opened the 2018 season with a 3-1 win at Clarion University.

• In men’s soccer, Stevenson tallied five goals in the first half and Penn College posted just eight shots as the Wildcats fell to Stevenson, 6-0.

Even Zewe scored in the first half and junior Lance Klingler scored in the second, as Lycoming captured a 2-0 victory over Geneva.

• In women’s volleyball, with three players averaging at least two kills per set, Lycoming College used a balanced attack to sweep a quad-match in the season-opener, posting 3-0 wins over Penn College, Wilkes and Clarks Summit.

Kiannah Titus posted 16 kills in seven sets while Elle Jednorski and junior Alysa McDevitt added 17 and 18 in eight sets, respectively. Jednorski and junior Katie Hausknecht each posted six blocks.
