Local roundup: Williamsport loses volleyball opener

Williamsport began its first season of varsity volleyball with a 3-1 loss to Sugar Valley, but the Millionaires played close sets with Sugar Valley throughout on Wednesday night at Williamsport.

In the four sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-27, 28-26), Williamsport only lost by two points twice and once by four.

“We are very proud of the way the girls played. We had set some goals at practices coming into the games. Their performance was very good,” first-year coach Linda Radocaj said. “We need to work on serves, but they all played well and we’re happy with the way they played.”

Williamsport will look to get its first win on Monday when the Millionaires head to Wellsboro.

Cowanesque Valley defeated Sayre in its season opener in five sets (24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-11, 15-10). Ashleigh Southard led Cowanesque with 16 digs and Kailey Wells had a team-high 10 assists.

• In girls tennis, Montgomery blanked North Penn-Liberty, 5-0. Katie Forrestal won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0 against Isabella Clark. Abby Stryker won for the Red Raiders at No. 2 singles and Brynna McHenry won at No. 3 singles.

• South Williamsport continued its strong start to the season by remaining unbeaten with a 3-1 win over Mount Carmel in girls soccer.

After an early equalizer in the second half by Mount Carmel, Bella Green scored her second goal of the game to give South Williamsport the lead it didn’t let up.

Lily Saul drilled a penalty kick with two minutes remaining in overtime to give Montoursville a 2-1 win over Milton. Saul ended with both goals for the Warriors.

Milton’s Crystal Hamilton tied the game up in the 71st minute.

“It was an incredible game with both teams playing with everything they had,” first-year Milton coach Rod Harris said.

Loyalsock won an overtime thriller thanks to Juliana Cruz’s game-winner in the 85th minute. Loyalsock scored two of its three goals on corner kicks in the win to improve their record to 2-0.

Aleaha Bigelow had a hat trick and Ashlynn Fowler scored a goal to help Muncy defeat Montgomery, 4-2.

Troy defeated Williamson, 12-0.

• Kevin Alexander scored three goals, Nathaniel Johnson and Taylor Nelson both scored twice and North Penn-Liberty beat Sayre in a rout, 10-1, in boys soccer.

Athens won a 1-0 contest against Wellsboro. Nate Redell had 10 saves in a losing effort. Athens scored its goal in the second half.

A quick goal 47 seconds into the game helped set the pace for Central Columbia as the Blue Jays defeated Montoursville, 3-0.

Jersey Shore and Danville battled to a scoreless tie after two overtime periods. Tim Martin preserved the shutout in goal with five saves.

• In high school golf at Wynding Brook, Warrior Run finished third with a team score of 86, behind just Bloomsburg (83) and Central Columbia (76).

The Defenders’ Elliot Kelchner shot an 86 to lead Warrior Run. Loyalsock finished in fourth with a 101 score.

• In women’s soccer, Lock Haven lost to Kutztown, 2-0, in the Bald Eagles’ home opener. Central Mountain grad Bree Hilty made four saves in goal for the Bald Eagles.

• In men’s soccer, Penn College fell to Keystone, 4-0, after Keystone scored three second-half goals.

Lock Haven’s Brian Flatter had a goal and two assists to help the Bald Eagles defeat Felician on the road, 4-1.

A second-half goal from Lycoming junior Zach Raut and the third straight shutout of the season from senior Chris Solecki helped lift the 20th-ranked Warriors past rival Susquehanna in the 18th annual Battle of the Boot, 1-0.

• Lycoming senior Emily Hepner s finished with 15 digs and five assists to keep Lycoming undefeated in women’s volleyball with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-22) win against Alvernia.

Sophomore Kiannah Titus led the Warriors with 12 kids and hit .522 while also scooping up seven digs.
