Bulldogs roll easily in victory

JERSEY SHORE – With “20 strong” signs littering the fences and bleachers at Thompson Street Stadium the Jersey Shore Bulldogs did everything they could have to make their injured teammate Caleb Leone proud. From the first whistle to the last, Jersey Shore dominated CMVT in the first round of District 4 Class AAAA semifinals, rolling in a 52-0 rout.

CMVT opened the game with a beautiful onside kick that was touched a yard early,

“It’s something we’ve done in the past and I’ve noticed the ends on their front line play quite a bit in. If that ball isn’t tipped at the eight yard line that’s our ball,” CMVT coach Mark Varner said. “We wanted to take chances, when you’re the underdog you gotta take chances.”

The shutout win for Jersey Shore was one in which they merely looked faster and stronger than their young opponents. On the first play from scrimmage, Tanner Lorson found Koby Peacock for a 48-yard touchdown and Jersey Shore didn’t look back. By halftime they led 45-0 and didn’t have to go to the air in the second half. Once the lead began rising and the rain began falling, Jersey Shore turned to their ground game. The Bulldogs had two running backs eclipse 100 yards in Dawson Sechrist (105 yards) and Josh Mailcky (102) three find the endzone as Sechrist, Malicky and Kyle Tomb (74 yards) all had a rushing touchdown.

Tomb and Malicky both had two rushing touchdowns.

“We were focused, we came prepared to take the field with this team. I’m happy for our team and coaches. We came together and we played this game for Caleb. I hope you’re getting better. We’ll win this district title for him,” Tomb said.

Tomb, who is coming off a leg fracture in the summer, feels like he’s finally beginning to truly get back to form.

“It just feels good, coming back from my fractured tibula. The coaches said I’m running the same as last year and it’s all muscle memory for me now,” Tomb said. “But I have to thank my linemen for blocking them, my best friends, they’re the wall.”

“It feels good because we’re seeing improvement. We saw it against Shikellamy and Shamokin. We ran into a tough Southern train when we went down there, but then we bounced back with a victory against a good team in Lewisburg and after that we did a lot of good things in the Bald Eagle game, just didn’t get the victory,” Jersey Shore coach Tom Gravis said. “We kept telling them we can still win the district championship and get a home playoff game. I see that improvement from seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen. We continue to get better no matter who we play we know it’ll be a tough challenge and quality opponent, but we’ll work hard. We still think there’s room for more improvement and we’ll get right back on that Monday.”
