Local roundup: North Penn-Liberty volleyball drops out of states

After sweeping through league and district play on the way to its third straight district title, the North Penn-Liberty volleyball team dropped out of the state tournament with its 3-1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15) loss to Holy Redeemer on Tuesday evening in the PIAA Class AA tournament.

“Our girls fought hard, but had too many unforced errors. If we had played our “A” game all the way through, it could have been us going to the Elite 8,” North Penn-Liberty coach Holli Smith said. “The Lady Mounties leave their heart on the court every game. They are the best all around team that I have ever coached. The seniors will be dearly missed on and off the court, but they have led the path for the team of 2019. The Mounties will step up and be a strong contender in the Northern Tier next year.”

Holy Redeemer took the first set, 25-15, before the Mounties came back with a 25-20 second-set win. NP-L held a 22-20 advantage in the third set before falling, 25-22. Redeemer took the fourth and final set, 25-15, to earn the win.

Brooke Harvey had 17 digs and 14 kills. Savannah Doney posted 37 receptions and 12 digs and JoAnne McNamara tallied team-highs of 23 assists and nine points.

“These ladies had a great season and it’s been a great ride for (us),” Smith said. “Both (the varsity and junior varsity) teams are an awesome group of young ladies with strong support at home from parents, grandparents and fans.”
