ROUNDUP: South’s Green earns all-state honor from Heartland

Sixteen area players received Heartland Athletic Conference soccer first-team all-star honors and South Williamsport’s Bella Green was the only local player to earn all-state honors, doing so as a defender from HAC-III. The all-star team was released Monday.

Green is South Williamsport’s first all-state selection since forward Autumn Rosenberg in 2010.

Williamsport sophomore Katie Penman received first-team honors in HAC-I as a forward. Montoursville junior midfielder Bella Masias and Williamsport senior midfielder Sydney Bruno were named to the HAC-I first team. Williamsport’s Abigail Berthold was named a first-team defender.

Milton’s Rod Harris was named HAC-I Coach of the Year thanks to guiding the Black Panthers to their first district semifinal appearance since 2009.

Lewisburg’s Allie Reed, Selena Permyashkin and Chloe Michaels all were named to the HAC-II first team as a forward, midfielder and defender, respectively. Other locals on the HAC-II first team were Warrior Run’s Paige Bowman (defender) and Jersey Shore’s Hannah Kauffman (goalie).

Loyalsock had a trio of first-team HAC-III selections in Juliana Cruz (forward), Hailey Zurich (midfielder) and Sarah Van Fleet (defender). South Williamsport also had three girls receive first-team honors in Haley Neidig (midfielder), Bella Green (defender) and Alyssa Johnson (goalie).

Hughesville’s Morgan Hopkins was named a first-team forward.

South Williamsport’s Dan Solley earned Coach of the Year honors in HAC-III after coaching the team to a 17-3 record.

• The Lock Haven men’s basketball team downed Carlow, 96-80, Monday night in Thomas Fieldhouse thanks to a 26 point showing from Matt Cerruti.

The Bald Eagles closed out the first half on a 20-4 run to push their lead to 19. The Haven built up a 51-32 halftime lead and led by as many as 24 in the second half as LHU cruised to the team’s first win.

Cerruti’s 26 points led the Bald Eagles offensively. He shot an efficient 10 of 14 from the field, including 6 for 9 from beyond the arc, while adding five rebounds and two assists.

• Lock Haven’s Corey Hazel went 4-0 on the way to the 184-pound title at the Black Knight Invite on Sunday and was named this week’s Eastern Wrestling League Athlete of the Week.

The redshirt junior and returning NCAA qualifier highlighted the day with an 11-5 win over Noah Stewart of Army in the finals, avenging a loss to Stewart a week ago.

After posting four wins for Lycoming at the VBR Sports Southeast Duals, senior heavyweight Garrett Wesneski has earned his second career Middle Atlantic Conference Wrestler of the Week award.

Wesneski, ranked sixth in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
