Nittany Lions likely headed to Citrus Bowl
Penn State appears destined for the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, and the most likely opponent is Kentucky, based on how everything shook out in Saturday’s conference championship games.
The bowl matchups will be announced this afternoon.
Alabama’s 35-28 comeback win over Georgia was perhaps the biggest game for Penn State on Saturday. Had Georgia held on to win, the Nittany Lions would have been in good position for a berth in a New Year’s Six game, most likely the Peach Bowl.
But with Alabama winning, the at-large bids in the New Year’s Six games are expected to be filled by teams ranked ahead of No. 12 Penn State in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Oklahoma’s win over Texas also played a big role, because the Sooners are expected to be the fourth and final team picked for the CFP. If by some chance Ohio State gets the No. 4 seed, then PSU could still be in line for the Peach Bowl.
As it stands, though, No. 15 Kentucky is the highest-rated SEC team and figures to be Penn State’s opponent in the Citrus Bowl.
