10 area wrestlers win at Central Sectional

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Hughesville’s Luke Gorg, rear, wraps up Muncy’s Mario Barberio during their match at 138 pounds on Saturday at Hughesville in the Central Sectional tournament.

HUGHESVILLE – Cael Crebs didn’t want to have to worry about wrestling on the mat with Coleman Good. He surely didn’t want to get underneath the Muncy senior where Good can turn even the best with his tilts.

So Crebs did his best to keep on his feet in the 152-pound final at the District 4 Central Sectional. The Montoursville sophomore executed his plan perfectly Saturday night. He took away Good’s best offensive attack and scored three takedowns of his own to capture his first sectional title.

Crebs was one of 10 local wrestlers to capture a Central Sectional title last night, joining teammates Dylan Bennett (170 pounds), Gable Crebs (195) and Cameron Wood (220). Muncy’s Bryce Vollman (126), Mario Barberio (138), Ty Nixon (160) and Mike Kustanbauter (182) also won titles. Noah Hunt (120) was Warrior Run’s lone champ, and Bobby Gardner (106) was South Williamsport’s first Central Sectional champion since Nate Jones in 2014.

In total, 39 local wrestlers finished in the top four of their respective weight class Saturday to qualify for next week’s District 4 Class AA tournament at Williamsport. Muncy accounted for 10 of those district qualifiers as the Indians won their second consecutive Central Sectional team title with 187.5 points. Montoursville qualified nine for districts and finished second with 158 points.

A win over Good, a returning state qualifier, would have been enough to qualify for a great tournament for Crebs. But he reached the finals by defeating eighth-ranked Nolan Lear of Benton in the semifinals convincingly, 5-1.

“We worked all week building up to this,” Crebs said. “I was in the room with my dad (Lycoming coach Roger Crebs) a lot and working on how to win certain situations and stay tight on top. I felt like I did pretty well.”

The key for Crebs was dominating both matches on his feet. He was stingy against Lear, a freshman who has two wins over Good this season, and scored a pair of takedowns in the win. Against Good, Crebs wrestled the entire mat and scored two of his takedowns as the two scrambled near the circle.

Both times, with one leg secure, Crebs was able to gather the second ankle to finish the takedown as the two went out of bounds. The second of his three takedowns came after Good chose to go neutral in the second period with Crebs leading 2-0. The third sealed the victory with 36 seconds left.

“You have to have good mat awareness and know how to drag your feet and keep your knees in, too,” Crebs said. “It’s pretty big being able to pull him in there, ride him out for that second period and not give up an escape.”

Crebs was keenly aware of the blast double Good has been known to hit with quickness and ferocity for a large portion of his takedowns. So he kept one hand on the mat basically taking away access to his own legs.

It allowed Crebs to bide his time until there was an opening. And when Crebs fired, he didn’t miss. It led to finishing off one of the most impressive performances of the entire tournament. Crebs earned his first section title after finishing third at 132 pounds a year ago in a weight class which featured the eventual state champion (Joe Klock) and state runner-up (Cole Rhone).

“That was the caliber I wanted to be at and I knew I needed to pick it up in the offseason and pick up my pace,” Crebs said. “I’ve been pretty sloppy so far this year, but I feel like I cleaned it up a lot for this tournament.”

Barberio joined Crebs as two of the three wrestlers to defeat a returning state qualifier in the finals last night — Central Columbia’s Nate Snyder defeated Muncy’s Christian Good at 145. But Barberio’s win carried a different significance. He had already defeated Hughesville’s Luke Gorg earlier this year, but that win was a fall after Barberio got caught in a five-point move early.

The Muncy junior thought all day about this re-match with Gorg being his opportunity to prove the first matchup was no fluke. The two wrestled a tremendous bout in the 138 final, with Barberio coming back after giving up the initial takedown to take a 3-2 lead on a second-period reversal. Gorg erased that one-point deficit with a third-period escape.

Barberio needed just seven seconds in overtime to score the decisive takedown when Gorg tried to hit an outside trip from a tie-up allowing Barberio to spin behind.

“I didn’t want people to think I just caught him the first time,” Barberio said. “Luke is a great opponent and I always like wrestling him. It was a great match.”

Gardner couldn’t help himself when the final seconds ticked off the clock of his 106-pound final. He turned toward coaches Eric Gerber and Tyler Watts and flashed them a smile.

The path to the freshman’s first sectional title and South Williamsport’s first in five years wasn’t easy. Gardner had to grind out a 15-10 win in overtime against Montoursville’s Kayden Frame in the semifinals. That win saw him erase a 6-2 deficit by recording four takedowns in the third period. He then caught Frame in a five-point move in overtime for the win.

He was locked in another dual in the final, tied 2-2 with Benton’s Zach Kremer. But Kremer was called for an illegal head scissors in a neutral scramble with only seven seconds left to give Gardner the winning point.

“This makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I can do a lot more than even I think I can,” Gardner said. “This is pretty important, but I need to keep moving on and get to districts and see what I can do there.”
