Two area players finish the first weekend with homeruns for LHU softball

Behind home runs from Jersey Shore and Central Mountain grads, respectively, Kayla Gee and Bree Hilty, the LHU softball team closed a busy weekend at the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament with a big 8-0 win over Goldey-Beacom in five innings. Gee and Hilty headlined the offense, Hilty was 2-for-2 and Becca Caputo was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. The win helped Lock Haven split today after they opened the day with a narrow 3-1 loss to Merrimack. Against Merrimack, LHU pitcher Bekah Slattery struck out five and Lock Haven’s four hits came from four different players. Against Goldey-Beacom, LHU plated eight runs on nine hits and put the game away in five innings. Gee helped her own cause as she was the pitcher of the record in the win. She threw a one-hitter and struck out two.

• In college swimming, Callan Jordan warded off a late come-from-behind attempt in the final 25 yards and set a program-record in the 200-yard backstroke, winning the second Middle Atlantic Conference title of his career on Sunday. Jordan is the sixth Warrior to win a MAC Championship in multiple events after winning the 100-yard backstroke in 2018 and he is the first 200-yard backstroke champion since A.J. LeViere in 2000. After besting his own 200-yard backstroke record with a time of 1:53.98 in the preliminaries, Jordan again broke the record with a time of 1:52.44 in the final.

• In women’s basketball, Lycoming will host a home playoff game for the first time since 1997. The Warriors are entering the MAC Commonwealth Championship as the No. 2 seed where it will host the No. 3 seed Widener University in the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. in Lamade Gym. The winner of Wednesday’s game will advance to the championship final on Saturday, Feb. 23 and will face the winner of the other side of the bracket, as No. 4 Arcadia faces No. 5 Lebanon Valley on Monday, with the winner advancing to face No. 1 Messiah at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hitchcock Arena.

• In college wrestling, Penn College’s Cam and Alec Dickey highlighted a contingent of five wrestlers that competed at the Northeast/Mideast Futures Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College on Sunday. Cam finished fifth at 141 with a record of 4-2 on th day, while Alec took sixth at 157. Gavin Link went 1-2 at 141 pounds, Makeela Fabrizo (157) and Collin Browne (174) also competed for the Wildcats.
