Local roundup: LHU baseball drops 2 to Winston-Salem St.

Lock Haven dropped the first two games of a four-game set at Winston-Salem State, 4-3 and 3-2, in college baseball Saturday.

The Rams took game one after scoring the game-winner in walk-off fashion. Lock Haven’s three runs came off seven hits, while Winston-Salem scored its four runs on four hits. Max Joseph went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Liam McArthur went 2 for 2 to lead the Haven. Jesse Slinger worked 6 1/3 innings and struck out three, while scattering four hits.

In game two, Winston-Salem State scored first, plating one run in the bottom of the first. Lock Haven trailed 2-0 after three, and got on the board again in the top of the fourth inning, from a Joseph solo home run. Lock Haven tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth, but Winston-Salem State plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the final frame and earned the sweep on another walk-off win.

Loyalsock grad, Jimmy Webb went 2 for 4 at the plate, and Scott Leiholf pitched five innings with four strikeouts and allowed four hits.

• In college softball, Lock Haven beat Le Moyne (9-3) before falling to South New Hampshire (8-2) at the PFX Tournament in Clermont, Florida.

In the second game, Loyalsock grad Kayla Gee threw 5 1/3 innings in the loss and Jersey Shore grad Becca Caputo threw 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Central Mountain grad Bree Hilty had a double for the Bald Eagles.

• Boston rallied past Bucknell, 13-9, in a Patriot League men’s lacrosse contest.

Will Yorke scored three goals, Ryan Durkin added a pair, and Tommy Sopko, Alston Tarry and Matthew Barkausas all had a goal and two assists for the Bison. Boston was led by James Burr’s four goals and the Terriers received a hat trick from Brendan Homire and two goals and four assists from Chris Gray.

• Lock Haven distance standout Cadie Kisher finished fourth in the mile with a time of 5:18.27 at the 2019 Alan Connie Shamrock Invite in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Karina Long, a Bald Eagles rookie leader in the jumping events, leaped to a PSAC championship qualifying mark in the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 2 3/4 inches to place fifth.

• Senior Hunter Watkins hit a NCAA provisional mark in the men’s javelin throw with a distance of 59.7-meters to lead Mansfield in what was a very successful opening weekend for the Mountaineer track and field teams in Lexington, Virginia.

Ryan Clifford continued his dominance to start the day for Mansfield in the men’s 3K-steeple, hitting a PSAC qualifying mark with a time of 9:34.34. Clifford’s time was also good enough for a new personal best in the event and was nearly four seconds better than the next closest runner.

• In men’s basketball, Penn State’s Josh Reaves earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors and Lamar Stevens was named a first-team selection for the 2018-19 All-Big Ten team.

Reaves was also an All-Defensive team selection.
