Local roundup: Summerson, South open tennis season with win

Franklin Summerson posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles to help South Williamsport defeat Shikellamy, 4-1, in boys tennis to open the season.

Spencer Karasek won at No. 2 singles (6-2, 5-7, 12-10) and Sam Livorno earned a win at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-1).

• Penn College concluded its spring break trip at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with four wins by defeating Dean College, 7-1 and 13-2, and beating Norwich (7-2) and Medaille College (10-7). Against Norwich, Williamsport grad Taylor Brooks went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and had a triple and two RBIs vs. Dean College.

Kayla Kline extended her hit streak to 15 games dating back to 2017, while notching her seventh multi-hit game of the year to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a split on its final day at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex, as Lycoming posted a 2-0 win over Albert Magnus in the afternoon after falling to Greenville, 4-3.

Rachel Gricoski put together a strong day at the plate and Loyalsock grad Kayla Gee earned her fourth victory to lead Lock Haven to a 2-0 day at the PFX Tournament with wins over Holy Family (6-1) and Sioux Falls (3-0).

• A seven-goal first quarter was enough to help the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team jump out to a lead that surged to seven points in the third quarter before the team rounded out a 13-9 win over UMass-Boston.

• In college baseball, Evan McAndrew struck out eight batters in seven innings of work and Mansfield High School grad Bryce Zaparzynski closed out the game with two scoreless innings to lead Mansfield University to a 3-1 non-conference win over Chestnut Hill.

• In men’s track and field, throwers Marcus Disbrow and Wade Laudeman both hit NCAA provisional marks with all-time top-five performances for Lock Haven at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invite in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
