Local roundup: Hughesville girls track splits tri-meet

Hughesville won two of the three relays and Cierra Getz clocked a 2:29.60 in the 800 meters as the Spartans split a tri-meet in girls track and field. Hughesville lost to Mount Carmel, 86-64, but defeated Sullivan County, 124-18. Amanda Derhammer had her best throw of the season in the shot put with a mark of 32-2 1/2. Sullivan County freshman Kassidy Beinlich won the 100 in 12.80.

Sydney Hoffman won a pair of throwing events as Warrior Run posted a 108-37 win over South Williamsport. Hoffman took first in the discus (77-7) and javelin (80-4) for the Defenders. Elizabeth Manning pulled out wins in both the 400 (1:04.8) and 200 (28.9) for South.

Veronca Sander picked up wins in both the 300 hurdles and the high jump, but Jersey Shore fell to Shikellamy, 84-66. Sander dropped a 51.35 in the 300 hurdles, and cleared 4-10 in the high jump. Taylor Fleming won the 100 and Aubrey Sechrist won the 400 for the Bulldogs.

Elena Malone helped lead Lewisburg to a 95-55 win over Milton by winning both the 200 and the 400 for the Green Dragons. Lewisburg swept the jumping events with Amelia Kiepke (long jump), Lizabeth Fessler (triple jump) and Erin Hilkert (high jump) posting victories.

Williamsport swept the relay events, but could not keep pace with Selinsgrove as they fell 82-68.

• Hughesville won just two individual events as it dropped a 113-32 boys track meet to Mount Carmel. The Spartans defeated Sullivan County, 133-0. Nick Houseknecht won the 110 hurdles in 18.40, and Caleb Dixon won the pole vault with a height of 9-6.

Despite running on a cinder track, South Williamsport’s Ethan Laudenslager hit the district qualifying time in the 300 hurdles, but the Mounties lost to Warrior Run, 80.5-67.5. Warrior Run’s Justis Brady picked up a trio of wins in the field, taking first place in the long jump, triple jump and high jump.

Logan Garrett picked up one of only two individual wins for Jersey Shore as it lost to Shikellamy, 120-30. Garrett won the shot put with a throw of 42-1 3/4. Stanton Westlin was the Bulldogs’ only other winner, taking the 300 hurdles in 42.92.

Josh Gose and Michael Tiffin combined to earn 16 of the 18 points in the shot put and discus for Lewisburg as the Green Dragons defeated Milton, 82-68. Gose won the shot put and took second in the discus, and Tiffin won the discus and took second in the shot put. Owen Keister won both the 100 and 200 for Milton.

Williamsport had 10 first-place finishes out of 15 events en route to a 96-54 victory over Selinsgrove. Allen Taylor won the 110 and 300 hurdles.

• In high school baseball, Montgomery defeated Sugar Valley in five innings, 13-0. Kevin Wettlaufer, Trevor Miller and Colby Springman combined to allow just three hits.

Springman went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs for Montgomery. Brayden Strouse went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Trevor Miller was 2 for 2. Hunter Budman added a double.

Wellsboro defeated Wyalusing, 13-8, thanks to a seven-run outburst in the sixth inning to pull away.

Cam Tennis and Silas Wagaman led the Green Hornets with three hits each and Taynton Repard had a double and two RBIs.

Millville scored seven runs in an inning twice as it defeated Muncy, 16-1, in three innings. The Quakers pounded out 13 hits, and Zane Robbins and Will Holdren held Muncy to just four hits.

• Anne Weller had a triple and Julianna Kriner had a double, but Millville scored nine runs in three innings to defeat St. John Neumann, 9-1.

Neumann held a 1-0 lead after three innings. Weller struck out 14 for the Golden Knights.

Muncy defeated Benton in just three innings, 17-2. Jen Frederick had a double and three RBIs and Rory Oden went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and, in the circle, allowed only six hits.

Jersey Shore blanked Selinsgrove, 10-0. Arizona Shreck went 2 for 4 with a triple, three RBIs and scored two runs. Daytona Wentzel was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Brianna Herman added a home run and Lexi Shuler hit a double.

Montoursville exploded for three runs in the fifth inning in a 6-1 win over Shamokin. MacKenzie Weaver was 3 for 4 for the Warriors, doubling and homering to drive in a pair of runs.

Madison Shaffer was also 3 for 4 with a triple and RBI for Montoursville.

Sydney Bachman drove in five runs and Ashley Gardner knocked in three to lead a high-powered South Williamsport offense to a 15-3 victory over Hughesville.

Emma Williams was 2 for 2 to lead North Penn-Liberty, who fell to Athens, 5-0.

Juliana Cruz and Maddy Jean combined on a five-inning no-hitter and Summer McNulty and Sam Stopper each homered as Loyalsock routed Southern Columbia, 13-0. McNulty drove in four runs, Stopper two and Loyalsock (9-2) scored 10 first-inning runs, making quick work of the Tigers and staying undefeated in the HAC-III.

Milton scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat Central Mountain, 6-3. Rachelle Campbell, Caitlyn Guisewite, Cameryn Guisewite and Emily Snyder all had two hits each for the Black Panthers.

• Loyalsock swept the doubles matches and Quinn Deitrick posted a win at No. 3 singles to give the Lancers a 3-0, rain-shortened win over South Williamsport in boys tennis.

Ben Wescott and Ty Whitmoyer combined for a 10-5 win at No. 1 doubles, and Alek Hamilton and Trace Haller won, 10-4, at No. 2 doubles for Loyalsock.

• In college softball, Lycoming was swept on the road against Stevenson, losing 2-1 and 6-5. In the first game, Kayla Kline led the Warriors by going 2 for 3. 

In the second contest, Kline had a home run and Taylor Gessner went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

South Williamsport grad Kalynn Wheeland went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and four runs for Bloomsburg in a 20-2 rout of Holy Family in the first game of a doubleheader, and was 2 for 4 with three RBIs in a 14-1 win in game two.

Penn College swept Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader, 4-0 and 10-2.

• In college baseball, Penn College beat Penn State Abington, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader before losing the second game, 10-3.

• Lycoming lost in men’s tennis to Lebanon Valley, 9-0. The Warriors’ Nick Meek lost at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1 to Justin Schuetz.

• In women’s tennis, South Williamsport grad Hannah Summerson notched a pair of wins to lead the Lycoming College women’s tennis team which fell to Lebanon Valley, 7-2.

• Ned Baumbach finished second individually to help Penn College to a third-pace finish at the Elmira College Spring Invitational. Baumbach was one stroke off of SUNY Delhi’s Jarrett McWilliams, who finished the 6,687-yard, par-72 course, with 75. Eli Dyer finished sixth with 79, Tyler Marks tied for 13th with 83, and Austin Moscariello and Brian Whelan both tied for 19th with 84s.
