Moser leads strong Warrior Run showing at Bald Eagle Invitational

LOCK HAVEN — Warrior Run’s Damein Moser was forced to adjust his goals for the season following Monday’s Bald Eagle Invitational at Lock Haven University. He had been hoping to crack the 4 minute, 30-second barrier in the 1,600 by the end of the season. But he’s a month ahead of schedule after doing it yesterday to win the event.

Moser was one of seven individuals to win an event Monday at the rescheduled Bald Eagle Invitational, joining teammates Justis Brady (high jump), Levi Kennel (pole vault) and Hoyt Bower (400). Loyalsock’s Zach Stopper (100, 200 and long jump) and Alex Reed (2,000 steeplechase), and South Williamsport’s Evan Laudenslager (3,200) joined the South 1,600 relay team as champions.

Moser’s fascination with the 4:30 mark in the 1,600 was all about hitting the state qualifying mark of 4:31.13 to know he could get there by the time the district meet arrived. But after clocking a 4:28.75 yesterday with a four-lap sprint, Moser has to re-think his goals.

“The only thing in my head was going sub-4:30,” Moser said. “I was so close to that 4:30 last week. That was my biggest goal coming into the season. But now I have to set a new goal because I hit it so early.”

Not only was it Moser’s best time of the season, but it was the fifth-best time in the state in Class AA this season. He put up that kind of pace when he ran a 65-second split in the opening 400 meters. It was actually a second faster than the mark Moser wanted to hit.

Initially he thought maybe, because he was a little quick, he should pull back. But assessing quickly how he felt, Moser liked the pace he was on. His stride never broke. His speed was effortless. He pushed through the entire four-lap race as if it were just a series of 100-meter sprints, and he ran them all as if he never got tired.

“When I heard a 68 split on my third lap, I knew I was going to come close to my goal, so I was just letting it all out for that last lap,” Moser said. “It doesn’t even feel like I relaxed at all. It just feels like I’m going at it as hard as I can.

“Running 4:28 now, I know I still have a month of training left and it really encourages me to go even lower.”

Reed looked a little disappointed at his time in the 2,000 steeplechase, but he couldn’t be upset with picking up the win. In an event which is run only at select invitationals throughout the season, it’s an event he would love to be available come districts and states.

Instead, he soaks up every moment he can during invitationals like Monday’s. He relishes in other athletes lining the area around the water pit cheering for him, but also waiting for him to wipe out in the water.

“Sometimes when I’m running around, I’m thinking about how I might do a cannonball on the next lap,” Reed said with a laugh. “This diversifies my events. I run the mile, but this is five laps and it adds the steeples, so it makes things interesting. When it’s interesting, it’s fun.”

Reed likes to practice before running the event but was unable to last week as he dealt with an illness. His winning time of 7:10.32 was better than 29 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Mitchell Frye of Archbishop Curley, and he was never really challenged in the race. But more importantly, he always found the proper footing around the water pit to make sure he didn’t end up as a viral Twitter video.

“When I come out of the water pit, I’m slopping around wondering why did I ever do this?” Reed said. “Sometimes your shoes get heavy and they tire you out. But it’s so fun. The environment is great.”
