Local roundup: WAHS softball takes second in own tournament

Williamsport’s softball team put together a strong performance at its tournament Saturday, beating St. Hubert’s, 4-1, and Berwick, 12-2, in five innings to take second place.

Hailey Debrody threw a four-hitter in the first game, earning her first varsity win and Lynna Robertson and Layla Waldman combined on a five-hitter against Berwick. Kylie Segraves helped Williamsport break a 1-1 tie against St. Hubert’s with a 2-run triple and added two hits in the second game.

Mariah Wright had three hits and three stolen bases in the victories and Emma Dickey went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs against Berwick. Myla Kelly went 1 for 1 with a run and three steals.

Anne Weller allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven, while also picking up two RBIs at the plate to lead St. John Neumann to an 11-3 win over Benton. Maria Helminiak went 3 for 5 with with four RBIs and Zuzu Shanaway and Juliana Kriner each added two hits as Neumann led 6-0 after the first two innings.

Madi Waltman threw another complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts and Marissa Pick added three hits as Warrior Run defeated Shikellamy, 10-0, in five innings.

The 12 strikeouts give Waltman over 200 for the season.

• In high school baseball, Taynton Repard threw six innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out seven and Wellsboro put up six runs in the top of the ninth inning to come away with a 10-4 extra-inning win over Warrior Run.

Kaeden Mann went 3 for 5 at the plate with two runs and Lucas Citrino and Isaac Keane each tallied three RBIs for the Green Hornets.

• Lewisburg secured the top seed in the District 4 Class AA boys lacrosse tournament and plays fourth-seeded Bellefonte in the semifinals at Danville on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Lewisburg won four consecutive district titles from 2014-17 before Selinsgrove snapped its streak last year.

• In girls lacrosse, second-seeded Lewisburg will play third-seeded Selinsgrove in the District 4 Class AA semifinals at Danville on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Danville, the top seed in the tournament, is looking to claim its sixth consecutive district championship.

• In men’s track and field at the PSAC Championships, Lock Haven’s CJ Anderson and Brian Zimmerman led the way as Anderson placed second in the 110 hurdles and was third in the 400 hurdles and Zimmerman finished third in the 200 and fourth in the 400.

Anderson ran the 110 hurdles in 14.60 and the 400 hurdles with a provisional mark of 52.77.

Zimmerman’s time in the 200 was 21.84 and had a season-best time of 48.58 in the 400.

• Central Mountain grad Laurel Moyer and Cadie Kiser finished 1-2 in the 5,000-meter run at the PSAC Championships and as a team, Lock Haven placed eighth overall.

Moyer took first in 17:45.75 and Kiser was right behind her wtih a time of 17:48.08.

Kayla Brathwaite was sixth in the 400 with a season-best and personal-best time of 58.34.

Bloomsburg’s Autumn Avery, a Hughesville grad, helped the Huskies’ 3,200 relay team win with a time of 9:19.41, winning by roughly three seconds.

• Six Lycoming College student-athletes earned a slot on the 2019 MAC Spring Sportsmanship Team. Included on the team are seniors Alec Sabatino (golf), Connor Riorden (men’s lacrosse), Sara Rockey (women’s lacrosse), Montoursville grad Cayla Treaster (softball), Brittany Lenze (women’s tennis) and junior Felix Mahon (men’s tennis).
