ROUNDUP: South’s Breen wins 8th in a row

Dom Harding hit a grand slam, Logan Burkett smacked two doubles and Tripp Breen won his eighth straight start as South Williamsport defeated Muncy, 8-1. Harding’s sixth-inning grand slam broke open the game and Burkett drove in three runs. Breen struck out 11 and allowed one hit in five innings.

Williamsport erupted for 15 runs in its final two at-bats, routing St. Mary’s, 16-1, in four innings. The Millionaires (13-4) won for the ninth time in 10 games as Kyle Caringi and Colin Esposito sparked the offense. Caringi went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Esposito went 3 for 3 with a career-high five RBIs and two runs. Dallas Greiss added two hits and Joe Fagnano added two RBIs for the Millionaires (13-4).

Andrew Ramirez hit a walk-off single as Lewisburg continued its late-season surge and defeated Danville, 4-3. The defending District 4 Class AAAA champions have won six of their last seven games since starting 3-8 and will try clinching a playoff berth Thursday against Mifflinburg. Lewisburg (9-9) rallied from a 2-1 sixth-inning deficit, Ramirez went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Owen Arndt allowed just two hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Montgomery fell to CMVT, 6-5, in nine innings. Hunter Budman led Montgomery going 3-5 with a run and RBI. Brayden Strouse and Gage Yohn each had two hits, Strouse had three RBIs.

Anthony Pastore threw a complete game as Loyalsock defeated Pottsville, 5-3. Rees Watkins went 3-4 with three RBIs, Connor Watkins had two hits and Dane Armson went 1-3 with two RBIs.

Devin Swank and Devin Machiewski combined on a one-hitter, a bunt single in the seventh inning, as Hughesville defeated Jersey Shore, 6-0. Swank threw 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball before Machiewski came on in relief for the final four outs. Jaret Stroup went 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs and Hunter Wentzel belted a two-run home run.

• Mookie Sauers threw a one-hit shutout as South Williamsport defeated Midd-West, 4-0, in high school softball. Lilly Eiswerth went 2 for 3 with a home run. Sydney Bachman had a home run. Ashley Gardner, Bella Bachman and Shea Floyd each had a hit.

North Penn-Liberty defeated Towanda, 7-6, on a two-run double from Mariah Kshir. Kshir went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Savannah Doney and Jess Kouba each had two hits and an RBI.

Madi Waltman allowed just two hits and struck out 18 as Warrior Run improved to 15-2 with an 11-0 win over Lewisburg. Hannah Michael (4 singles), Jade Swartz (2 singles) and Amber Pentycofe ( 2 singles) each had multi-hit games for the Defenders.

Annabelle Bergey and Leia Eisenhower each went 2 for 3, but Southern Columbia jumped out to a six-run lead and rolled on its way to defeating Muncy, 15-5, in six innings. At 9-10, Muncy needs to defeat St. John Neumann today to clinch a postseason berth.

Emily Snyder allowed just four hits and struck out 11 to move into second place on the school’s all-time strikeout list as Montgomery defeated Canton, 8-0, for its 15th straight win. Snyder, who also went 2 for 4, now has 377 career strikeouts.

• In college baseball, Lock Haven’s Liam McArthur earned a spot on the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association Atlantic All-Region second team.

McArthur added the All-Region honor after being named first-team All-PSAC East for the second consecutive season last week. The Bald Eagles centerfielder started every game and posted a .972 fielding percentage.

• Mansfield senior Hunter Watkins qualified for the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships in the javelin. It marks the third consecutive season Watkins has qualified for the national meet.

Watkins set a school record in the javelin at the Bucknell Team Challenge on April 20 with a PR of 67.48 meters. The mark broke a 13-year-old school record in the event that was set by Jeremy Confer in 2006.

• After leading the MAC Commonwealth in batting average (.469) and slugging percentage (.708), junior Kayla Kline became the first Lycoming softball player in 15 years to earn all-region accolades, as she was named to the NFCA East Region third team.

Kline, two-time first-team All-MAC Commonwealth shortstop, finished the season 53 for 113 at the plate, posting the third-best average in program-history and a .512 on-base percentage (second in program history).
