Zurich victorious in 4 total events

SOUTH CENTRE TWP. — Hailey Zurich took a second to think, looking for an answer of some substance. There just wasn’t one to be had.

The Loyalsock senior can’t explain why she’s been so successful in four events this year, she just knows preparing for them all can be difficult.

Zurich was a four-time winner during Saturday’s Pennsylvania Heartland Athletic Conference meet at Central Columbia High School, winning individually in the 100 (12.54 seconds), long jump (16 feet, 7 inches) and pole vault (12 feet). She teamed with Sophia Gardner, Charlotte Neylon and Megan Kendall to win the 400 relay.

In all, it was quite the day for an athlete who is already a three-time state pole vault placewinner who has expanded he repertoire this year.

Milton’s Leah Bergey, who won both the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Central Mountain’s Amelia McCloy (high jump) were the only other local athletes to win individual events in the girls meet yesterday.

But it was Zurich who stole the show. She was bested for Athlete of the Meet by a vote of the league’s coaches by Shikellamy’s Nicole Keeley, who won the 1,600 and 3,200 and ran a leg of the winning 3,200 relay team, but it did nothing to diminish just how truly impressive her performance was.

“I think overall when you get to do the four-by-one with this team and you have the same three girls always around you, you can keep your mind off other things and just execute what you’re doing,” Zurich said. “I like that aspect of it.”

She has always been a multi-event athlete. But she hasn’t always been a multi-event winning athlete until this year. She has found another gear in the 100, where she ran her PR yesterday in 12.54 to take first place. She’s found new strength in the long jump where she set a PR earlier this year at the Jim Taylor Invitational at Susquehanna. And in her signature event, she set a PR of 12-3 three weeks ago and won with a height of 12 feet yesterday.

And that 400 relay team? Well a little over a week ago they ran the third-best time in the state this year at 49.84, which is just .21 behind the leading time in Class AA this year.

All the effort leaves her feeling drained at the end of the day. Yesterday, as she waited to collect her final medal, she took time to lay down in the shade on the field turf and just relax.

“I’m going to be doing this stuff for the next four years of my life, so you have to get serious about it all at some point,” the Penn State recruit said. “It’s finally paying off now and being able to focus on my visualization before my jumps and before my sprints has me in the right mindset.”

She has the benefit of being around teammates who have similar goals to hers. Gardner and Neylon both finished in the top eight in the 100. Kendall had a pair of third-place finishes in the hurdle events to go with her anchoring of the relay team. And Gardner was the runner-up to Zurich in the long jump.

It’s an insanely talented and competitive group who find ways to lift each other up every weekend.

“I don’t know for sure, but I can’t imagine another school being as close as we are,” Zurich said. “When you work collectively like we have for the past month, you see results that are insane. We’re all proud of each other and we all feel each other’s pain. We go through everything together. So I think it makes everything so much sweeter when it goes well.”
